Westhampton Beach firefighters battled a small blaze at the Six Corners Wines and Liquor store on Mill Road on Tuesday morning.

The Westhampton Beach Fire Department responded to the scene at 9:59 a.m. and, according to a press release, firefighters located an extensive fire in the interior ceiling, near the front entrance.

Police said a small brush fire was initially reported on the side of the shop but quickly engulfed the building. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Southampton Town fire marshal.

Flames could be seen consuming an awning in front of the store at 10:15 a.m.

“The fire started at the side of the building where we store our cardboard,” store clerk Emmett Boone said.

According to firefighters, the fire was quickly put out, but Mill Road remained closed for about an hour and a half, during which officials vented the roof and searched for any hot spots.

Firefighters from the Westhampton Beach Fire Department, whose headquarters building is around the corner from the liquor store, and the Eastport Fire Department were on the scene, as were members of the Village Police Department and the Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance. The Quogue Fire Department also stood on standby on Brook Road.

According to the Westhampton Beach Fire Department, no injuries were reported in the blaze.

Considering we have one of the largest (if not THE largest firehouses) in Suffolk County, why did two other towns need to respond? Is the building mostly vacant? Does Eastport need some work? Does Quogue not trust WHB to put the "wet on the red"?

In other news the old way to serve rose was slightly chilled. For 2018 it will be slightly warm.

Not a very constructive comment Hambone. Then again its easy for cowards to hide behind their screen name. More then anything you should be thankful volunteers stop what they are doing in the middle of the day and put their lives on the line. Second no one was hurt. Third the Village looses a thriving (Year round) business that's been a part of the community for years. Hope they rebuild and open soon!

It is standard procedure for every department to call in mutual aid for a structure fire. Only a few days ago the voilunteers of Westhampton Beach provided aid to East Moriches for a house fire. The need for extra manpower is particularly high during working hours when many volunteers are at their jobs (sometimes out of town) and cannot respond.

And, Hambone, people will take your remarks more seriously if you do not hide behind a pseudonym.

Your comment just reaffirms what just happened. Every brush fire brings out 3 fire houses.

Can anyone spell on this site?

Its truly amazes me that people will comment just to see their name in the paper. Hambone, you are the complete opposite of class act. These men and women that volunteer for the Fire Department or Ambulance services dedicate hundreds of hour a year for training and calls. They leave their families, parties, vacations and family functions to help those in need. Instead of trying to show disrespect for these hero's, trying volunteering your time to help the community you live in. And maybe you ...more
