Albert R. O’Connell of Westhampton Beach died on Sunday, May 17 at Stony Brook Hospital. He was 76.
Born in Rosedale, Queens, on October 6, 1932, he was a United States Marine who served in the Korean War as a member of 3rd Battalion, 7th Regiment, 1st Marine Division, also known as the “Ghost Battalion.” Wounded in combat twice, he was awarded two Purple Hearts.
After returning from duty, he continued his education, completing his undergraduate work at Fordham University, then earning a master’s degree in education at Hofstra University.
In 1958, Mr. O’Connell came to Westhampton Beach to teach social studies. He eventually taught at Riverhead High School, where he remained until his retirement in 1990.
A charter member of the Knights of Columbus Father Slomski Council, Mr. O’Connell was also a member of the Quogue VFW, Marine League, Immaculate Conception Parish Council, and many other organizations.
During his retirement, if he wasn’t rooting for the Mets and Jets he filled his days with volunteer work, family members recalled.
Mr. O’Connell was known for his love for his family, his community, and his country.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gertrude; four sons, Albert of Westhampton Beach, Gerard and his wife Rita of New York, Joseph and his wife Seleena of Flanders, and Matthew of Florida; a daughter, Mary and her husband Brian of East Quogue; and seven grandchildren, Terance, Ian, Clare, Aidan, Hailey, Rose and Shea.
A wake was held at the Follett and Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach on May 22.
A funeral service was held on May 23 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Quiogue and was officiated by Father Joseph Mirro, Monsignor Walter Murphy and Deacon Joseph Byrne. Interment was private.
