Queenie E. (Street) Archie of Bridgehampton died June 1 at Southampton Hospital. She was 91.
Ms. Archie was born in Dewitt, Virginia, on April 15, 1924. She was baptized at Eleven Oaks Baptist Church in Dewitt, where her father served as a deacon. Her mother was a local midwife.
Ms. Archie moved to Bridgehampton with her sister Mary Francis in 1940, when her mother became ill. She attended Bridgehampton High School during that time. After her mother recovered, she went home to Dewitt, but returned to Bridgehampton every summer. On one of her visits, she met Rudolph Archie of Gregory, North Carolina, and they married on October 17, 1943, at the Bridgehampton Methodist Church. They moved to Norfolk, Virginia, but eventually returned to Bridgehampton.
She joined the First Baptist Church of Bridgehampton under the pastorate of the late Reverend William Collins. During her many years as a member of the church, she taught Sunday school and became its assistant superintendent, sang with the senior choir and served as secretary of the building committee, which was responsible for the new building on the Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike; the church had formerly been housed in the old firehouse on Corwith Avenue. She was named “Mother of the Church” on May 18, 2014, the church’s 90th anniversary.
For many years, Ms. Archie worked for the Herbert family, first at their restaurant and market in Southampton. She also worked for Global Aircraft in Montauk and for the American Red Cross at local senior citizens centers as a site cook, until she retired.
Ms. Archie was predeceased by her husband and a son, Rudolph Jr. She is survived by four daughters, Jerlean Hopson of Southampton, Arlean Vanslyke of Southampton, Regina Renee Tucker of Virginia, and Marie Denise Cummings and husband Thomas of Southampton; grandchildren, Albert Anthony Vanslyke of Southampton, Robert Anthony Hopson Jr. and wife Stacy Elizabeth of Hampton Bays, Jasmin Renee Tucker of East Harlem and Davin Anthony Johnson of Southampton; four great-grandchildren, Tyler Anthony Vanslyke of East Hampton, Taylor Marie and twins Robert Anthony III and Paige Elizabeth Hopson of Hampton Bays; and her neighbor and friend, Dorothy Davis. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the J.M. O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton.
