Marty Madison Jr. of Bridgehampton died on October 27 at Southampton Hospital. He was 81.
Born on November 22, 1933, in Southampton to Marty and Ina Mae Madison, both of whom predeceased him, he attended Bridgehampton High School and graduated in 1952. After a stint in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955, Mr. Madison retired a veteran of Korea with honors. He then went on to work at Hampton Arrow Laundry and Southampton Hospital before retiring.
Mr. Madison was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Bridgehampton in 1945. He was a member of the church’s youth choir, the Usher Board and the Senior Missionary Society. He was ordained a deacon in 1972 and was a very faithful member of the church. He was a member of the male chorus, which he loved and participated in until his health began to fail, and his favorite hymns were “I’m on the Battlefield” and “This Little Light of Mine.”
As a boy, he was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, Troop #126.
Mr. Madison met and married Doris Riddick in 1957, after eight months of courtship.
In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is survived by two sons, Vincent Madison of Southampton and Avery Madison of Virginia; three daughters, Tracy Brown of Medford, Kim Smith of Southampton and Knovella Madison of New Jersey; his grandchildren, Jennifer Brown and Calvin Young of Mastic, Dashawn Young of Bellport, Scottie and Shantavia Madison of Virginia, Sharnell Madison of Virginia, Andrew Smith of Maryland and D’Angelo Smith of Greenport; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Verna Brown of Speonk and Bessie Pendleton of Bridgehampton; a brother in-law, Walter Brown of Speonk; and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives and friends, including adopted daughters, Rena Morgan and Wanda Harris, cousin Joe “Sunny” Johnson and a good friend, Betty Nichols.
The family received friends on November 1 at the First Baptist Church of Bridgehampton. A funeral service took place on November 2 with Reverend Dr. H.G. McGhee Jr. officiating. Interment with military honors followed at Calverton National Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
