UPDATE: Friday, 11:45 a.m.

The Planning Board on Thursday night closed the public hearing on the proposal to expand the TJ Maxx store in Bridgehampton to include a Marshall’s, with a 30-day written comment period.

At the Planning Board meeting on Thursday night, members of board requested the applicant consider adding an entrance at the rear of the building to better access an under-utilized back parking lot. According to attorney Timothy McCulley of the Southampton-based firm Burke and Sullivan, TJ Maxx is hesitant to add the second entrance.

Although Mr. McCulley said his client had not been open to the idea in the past, he will approach them again with the proposal. He also added that the construction would add a 5-foot-wide walkway from the back parking lot to the front of the building where the entrance is located, plus lighting, to make it safer and easier for patrons.

“TJ Maxx doesn’t want a rear entrance because it is a security thing,” Mr. McCulley said. “We will go back to them and see if we can work it out. That is always an issue, so it will be a part of the discussion as we move forward.”

No one from the public addressed the board on Thursday night regarding the proposal.

ORIGINAL STORY

TJ Maxx is hoping to expand its current Bridgehampton Commons location to add a Marshall’s, a popular department store-style chain that advertises cheaper prices than similar stores.

The proposal, which was submitted to Southampton Town on September 17 and is currently making its way through the Planning Board, is to expand the Bridgehampton Commons building location by 17,000 square feet. If approved, the current TJ Maxx location would be reconfigured to occupy 23,987 square feet of space, while the Marshall’s floor space would encompass 21,879 square feet. Together, the brands—which are owned by the same parent company, TJX Companies, and often share the same storefront—would share 5,424 square feet of common space used for storage, delivery and shipping purposes.

If approved, the building would be expanded on the side bordering Snake Hollow Road. Although it would eliminate approximately 15 parking spaces, a traffic report conducted by Dunn Engineering in Westhampton estimates there would still be ample parking on peak holiday and summer days to accommodate the new store.

A public hearing on the proposal is scheduled for Thursday night, November 12, at 7 p.m. during the Planning Board meeting in the Southampton Town meeting room on Hampton Road.

The board should definitely approve this request. The addition of affordable clothing stores on the South Fork is sorely needed it goes hand in hand with affordable housing.

Will they be expanding their security as well regarding the blatant shop lifting that occurs there all of the time? Or is that just a write-off of their balance sheet?
By Vikki K (490), Southampton on Nov 12, 15 5:28 PM
I agree that shoplifting is a problem when it happens, but i think it should be up to local police to patrol and enforce our laws. Handing this responsibility over to Tj Maxx would be a dangerous move. Just imagine if Tj Max were able to pull you over for speeding in the parking lot or seize your car during an investigation...A fair amount of downside to this plan. Plus the training of TJ Max agents to fully comply with law enforcement practices sounds like a nightmare.

If the town board ...more

Hello Vikki K you are another person who just can't mind their business. How does shoplifting at TJ max matter to you?

I think she means that if enough people are stealing from TJ Max that it could have adverse affects on all customers. More theft could lead to: an increase in the cost of goods at the store, lowering of employee wages, customers feeling unsafe within the store, neighboring tenants gossiping about how TJ Maxx is kind of falling apart and needs to get her life back together, etc.

I'm with you though, I dont care what happens to anyone but myself and my own stuff (with the exception of ...more

Great news! Quality merchandise, name brands and prices the locals can afford--a store that does not cater to the summer residents--plus more jobs will be created.

Hey Chief 1 - Besides all of the answers the kind person submitted following your question - the one with the long necklace in the photo - do you like watching people steal? I don't. It bothers me to see people breaking the law. And it bothers me to find boxes in the store out of place missing their proper items like when shopping there last Christmas season. And behind my comment is my dislike of giant shopping malls in general and in the Hamptons specifically. It ruins the character of a ...more

If you don't like giant malls don't shop at them. Obviously some people like them so they are here. Why do people living here think it's okay to think they are the only ones entitled to live here?

We need a Barnes & Noble not a Marshalls...
A Brookstone not a Dollar store...
A Whole Foods not a trader Joes...

This is Bridge Hampton not Patchogue

^^^^ Every comment on this thread is so ridiculous and out of place.

How is a Book Store comparable to a clothing store? "Whole Foods, not a trader joes". You had a Whole foods and it didn't do enough business so it never came back. And you didn't even spell Bridgehampton right.

And not for nothin', but there's a police substation @ the commons. And how do "shopping malls" as opposed to "mom & pop stores" result in more pollution? What are you people talking about?

You had a Whole foods and it didn't do enough business ...Thats because It was not a real Whole foods and in the wrong place. I mean a flagship store in a central location. It would be a great use for the West woods property the Indians own with frontage on Sunrise Hwy. with an up and over ramp to go east bound.I think It is a much better Idea than the proposed King Kullen in S H and It would be a better received source of revenue for the tribe than a casino

I know lots of millionaires who shop at TJMaxx. Nuthin' wrong with a bargain.
By harbor (401), East Hampton on Nov 13, 15 12:14 PM
Well, there is something wrong when people are taking it upon themselves to determine the bargain. Apparently theft is rampant at this store so maybe some of these millionaires should start paying for what they leave the store with (lord knows that they can afford it).

Seems like someone is asleep at the wheel over there. @Vikki K , can you shed some more light on the situation for us.

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Where the pretty people play,
hungry for power
to light their neon way
and give them things to do

Some rich men came and raped the land,
Nobody caught 'em
Put up a bunch of ugly boxes, and Jesus,
people bought 'em
And they called it paradise
The place to be
They watched the hazy sun, sinking in the sea

You can leave it all behind
and sail to Lahaina
just like the missionaries did, so many years ago
They even brought a neon ...more
