Spyder Roadster Makes Its Debut

Jul 21, 2011 10:22 AM

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco has introduced the Can-Am Spyder Roadster, the newest vehicle in his arsenal against aggressive drivers on the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway. The high-tech roadster, which looks like a cross between a snowmobile and a motorcycle, promises to provide deputy sheriffs with increased agility to move through traffic, as well as maneuver through grass and tough terrain, officials said.

The sheriff’s office has been at the forefront of utilizing new technology and equipment to combat aggressive driving since it began patrolling the county’s main thoroughfares.

The vehicle is on loan to the sheriff’s office from Formula 1 Motor Sports of Oakdale and the Canadian manufacturer, BRP Inc., for the purpose of testing its usefulness as a law enforcement tool.

This Roadster may possibly catch up with traffic offenders through dense traffic, but at what risk to the officer driving this 4WD "motorcycle" through dense traffic, brush etc.?

Has the union signed off on this "accident waiting to happen," and has the County's Worker Compensation carrier approved this use as well?

You might as well label this vehicle as a dis-service to the fine men and women who will be assigned to swerve it in an out of traffic, without much "armor" around ...more

I agree with all of the above. Police officers have a licsense to "speed'..whether it is on the 495, Rt27 and/or straight gown Main St. Yes they must respond quickly, but not at our expense. Not a good idea..they drive crazy to begin with.

It was crazy to allow the Sheriff's Department to patrol the highways. Their expertise consists entirely in guarding incarcerated prisoners and in transporting them between jail and court for trial appearances. Moreover, this widened jurisdiction has enabled them to compel "respect" from the public which they have felt for decades has been denied them. (Although they have county-wide jurisdiction they were never permitted to exercise it outside of jail, the transport vehicles and the court AND ...more

According to Can-Am's website these bikes start at $18,000, thats for a bare bones bike so this is a pretty pricey toy. Not really cost effective in this economy.....oh wait thats right we (the taxpayers) paid for that.
