Southampton And East Hampton Democratic Officials Endorse Calone For Congress

Jan 12, 2016 5:40 PM

Most Democratic elected officeholders in Southampton and East Hampton towns have endorsed Dave Calone in his battle with Anna Throne-Holst for the Democratic Party nomination in next year’s 1st District congressional race, according to a release from Mr. Calone.

On Monday, Suffolk County Legislator Bridget Fleming, who was Ms. Throne-Holst’s colleague on the Southampton Town Board, joined newly elected Southampton Town Councilman John Bouvier, East Hampton Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell, and East Hampton Town Board members Peter Van Scoyoc, Sylvia Overby and Kathee Burke-Gonzalez in releasing a joint statement supporting Mr. Calone. He hopes to run against U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin to represent the 1st Congressional District if he can defeat Ms. Throne-Holst in a Democratic primary.

“We’re proud to endorse lifelong Democrat Dave Calone for Congress,” the statement reads, referencing that Ms. Throne-Holst, although now a registered Democrat, was until recently a member of the Independence Party. “We need a leader who understands how to create a sustainable economic future for the East End.”

On Tuesday, Ms. Throne-Holst’s campaign manager, Andrew Grunwald, responded to the statement, saying the former Southampton Town supervisor has received several notable endorsements since launching her campaign.

“Anna is proud to have been endorsed by Democrats at every level of government representing Suffolk County and beyond, including Shelter Island Town Supervisor Jim Dougherty, Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay, Southampton Democratic Chairman Gordon Herr, U.S. Congressman Steve Israel, and many other members of the New York delegation,” Mr. Grunwald said in an email on Ms. Throne-Holst’s behalf.

“Anna has been endorsed by Democratic leaders on a national level led by Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer,” Mr. Grunwald said. “It is clear that the overwhelming majority of Democratic leaders are rallying behind Anna’s campaign.”

This week, East Hampton Town Democratic Committee Chairwoman Jeanne Frankl explained that the party did not make the endorsements as a group, and that Mr. Calone had reached out to individual party members on his own.

Mr. Cantwell, the East Hampton Town supervisor, said he chose to endorse Mr. Calone based on interactions with him over the past few years. “I am happy to lend my support to David,” he said. “We’ve had a close working relationship, and I think he’s an outstanding person and would be a terrific congressman.”

True colors of the Southampton Dem's - Gordon Heir and George Lynch and the rest of the crew praised ATH when they needed her now they don't so they throw-her away - these people stand for NOTHING! I'm sure Gordon was told not to support her to keep his BS job in the BOE !

Their major interest in AT-H was always that she wasn't a Republican -- you know tho old saying: "Any port in a storm!"

But the article says Gordon Herr DOES support her.

Sorry Anna but you are not a REAL Democrat,

Now we're talking! I first met Dave Calone and heard him speak in May of 2015. I was enormously impressed, first by a background that seemed to include everything -- top schools, prosecuting terrorists, investment group, County government -- and then by a strikingly humble manner completely lacking in any of the elitism that one might expect from a person with such a background.

The combination sold me early on, I have to admit, but further observation revealed an array of sound policies ...more

How fast you turn your back on ATH...

Like a Thoroughbred. Ran its races, no longer useful, sent to auction.

All well and good but Lee Xeldin will remain our Congressman

Lee Zeldin may remain in Congess, but he is not ours. He supports too many agendas for his political future not the needs of East Enders.

This isn't good for the future of the east end, and not because Dave Calone is a poor choice. Simply because splitting votes at all between the dems will allow career politician, I mean career panderer, Lee zeldin to retain his seat.

Here is to hoping the primary is fair and honest and doesn't split the party...

Brandon,

Not to worry about a split in the party. Calone is a lifelong Democrat, his potential primary opponent is an opportunity democrat. An opportunity democrat is someone who becomes a democrat to advance her/his personal agenda.

And remember what happened to the last Congressperson who was elected as a Republican and switched enrollments to Democrat.

He lost!

History tells us an Independence Party member who switches to Democrat just to run for Congress ...more

Career politician? One term in state senate, one term in congress.

Mr. Tiger,

The SH Dems clearly like Calone. Now that ATH is out of power, I expect she will disappear into the Real Estate Business...

The strategic planning of the DC is spot on. Having Calone's Planning Commission vote down the Tuckahoe Center, right before he resigned from said commission put his name on the map east of the canal... But, what about the investors in that project? Did they truly deserve having their work, and money, used as fodder against ATH for Congress? Or, ...more

Lee is representing his constituency well, those who work for a living need him in Congress, not another liberal Democrat , the party of the freetuffers!
By bigfresh (4309), north sea on Jan 12, 16 9:20 PM
The campaign manager for A.T.H. does not understand the district very well. Endorsements from people outside the district are meaningless to those independent minded voters who vote here.
It may be seductive to rub shoulders with these outsiders but to those who work two or more jobs to live here it does not help make ends meet.
The primary should be won by the person who can best represent us. Issues not Endorsements

Someone whose never had a job other than being a politician is a career politician, regardless of how long or fruitful that career has been...I don't count his college rotc and subsequent reserve army status as a job either because of the way he throws it around like he's a full fledged American hero. Loves to say he was deployed to Iraq, but no one ever questions the fact that he was a lawyer, sitting at a base telling a general what was legal and what wasn't. For a couple months. Then was sent ...more

How about "Thank You for your service, Congressman"?

Being deployed to Iraq, no matter what your job, is a strain on your family and difficult at best.

Did you serve your country? Doubtful. If you had, you would know that attacking a man for what his job was while serving is wrong. He volunteered. He had a law degree. He was only going JAG or Intel at that point. As much as our Armed Forces need infantry, they need Officers as well.

As much as a dislike "Career Politicians", ...more
