Flanders firefighters assisted their counterparts in Riverhead in dousing five separate brushfires after they broke out along a half-mile stretch of Nugent Drive, on the Southampton/Brookhaven town border, shortly after 5 p.m. last Thursday, May 30. The cause of the fires, which charred grass and brush along the fence separating the road from the woods, has not yet been determined. Southampton Town Fire Marshal John Rankin inspected the area. Riverhead Fire Department 2nd Assistant Chief Kevin Brooks said the fires were all extinguished quickly using about 5,000 gallons of water between the two departments.
