Teen In Critical Condition After Saturday Crash In Flanders

Jun 29, 2011 11:08 AM

A teenager remained in critical condition early this week after being struck by a car while riding his bike at the intersection of County Road 105 and Flanders Road at about 10:15 p.m. on Saturday, June 25.

According to Southampton Town Police, Rashad Jackson, 13, of Mastic, was found in the southbound lane of County Road 105. Detectives determined that, prior to being struck, Rashad was riding his bicycle westbound in the crosswalk on Flanders Road and had crossed the northbound lane of County Road 105 safely.

But when he attempted to cross the southbound lane of the four-lane highway, against traffic, he was struck by a southbound 2004 Chevrolet pickup driven by John Hatton, 55, of Babylon, police said. Neither the driver nor a passenger in his vehicle was injured, and Mr. Hatton was not charged with any offenses because police determined he did not cause the accident or commit any violations.

Rashad was treated at the scene by the Flanders-Northampton Volunteer Ambulance and transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was later transferred to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where he was still a patient as of Tuesday.

Rashad, who was visiting relatives in Flanders, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said. Officers said they have not been able to interview him because of his condition.

Meanwhile, the vehicle passed a safety check following the crash, police said.

The Southampton Town Police Detective Division is continuing the investigation. Anyone with information on the accident is encouraged to call 702-2230, or the Southampton Town Police Crime Tips Hotline at 728-3454. Information can be also be sent by email to crimetips@southamptontownny.gov. All information will be kept confidential, police said.
