Fundraiser Slated For Critically Injured East Hampton Man

Sep 18, 2018 3:20 PM

A fundraiser will be held on Thursday, September 20, to raise money for the medical care of Byron Mora-Llauca, 24, of East Hampton, who as of Saturday remained in critical condition at Stony Brook University Hospital after his motorcycle struck a tree on September 9 in Springs.

The fundraiser will be held at the Blue Parrot Bar and Grill in East Hampton at 9 p.m. There will be a $10 cover charge and a live DJ, raffles and a silent auction.

A GoFundMe page was created on September 11 by Derek Milgate, a friend of Mr. Mora-Llauca, to help cover health care costs; according to the page, Mr. Mora-Llauca does not have medical insurance. Titled “Help Byron’s Fight,” the page has raised $6,600 of the $50,000 goal.

The page, which was last updated on Saturday, said Mr. Mora-Llauca was stable and preparing to undergo a second neurosurgical procedure.

Most Holy Trinity Church in East Hampton will hold a Mass in Mr. Mora-Llauca’s name on Sunday at 7 p.m.

Wasn't he charged by police with with driving while intoxicated and criminal possession of a controlled substance? So he was drunk and high and crashed his motorcycle into a tree. Very fortunate he didn't kill an innocent person in the process.

I take it you’re not going to go-fund-him?

Cocaine possession and DWI?

We all make mistakes and this young man is very lucky to be alive and to have friends and members of the community who care so much about him. Being a motorcycle enthusiast of 40 + years, I’ve lost 4 people in my circles due to motorcycle accidents where the operator was under the influence, 2 being female passengers riding two up. Reading the initial story brought up old feelings of those senseless losses. I sincerely wish a speedy and full recovery for this young man. Best of luck reaching your $$ goals to cover medical expenses. Be safe!

Probably not. But I do find it disturbingly ironic that they are holding the fundraiser for a guy who injured himself while driving drunk by having it at a BAR and advertising MARGARITAS on the flyer. I hope the police are waiting outside the fundraiser to discourage any of the attendees from following in his footsteps.
