Evelyn Greene King of Riverhead died at the Peconic Bay Skilled Nursing Facility on September 30. She was 78.
Born on May 14, 1937, to Myron and Evelyn Bennett of Southampton, both of whom predeceased her, she was one of 10 children. For many years she worked as a waitress at The Buttery in Southampton (now defunct), formerly Margaret’s Rendezvous. Survivors said she will be remembered for her quick wit, pleasant smile and zest for life. She could also be very candid and was often heard to say “don’t let the door hit you on the way out” if she heard a rude comment.
She enjoyed many things including bingo, gardening, crocheting, going to the beach, flip flops, frogs in any form, a good cup of coffee and a good meal.
Ms. King was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Harold Bennett; and sisters, Dorothy Painter and Beverly McKavish. She is survived by sisters Joan Kelly of Florida, Barbara Kincaid of Las Vegas, Mary Ellen Renkens of Hampton Bays; brothers, Eugene Bennett of Riverhead and John Bennett of Southampton; four children, David Greene and wife Debbie, Kevin Greene and wife Pam, Debbie Harrington and Mryon Greene; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral service was held at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead on October 5. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice, Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978.
