A Southampton woman who police said was intoxicated when she veered off County Road 39 in Southampton Sunday night—her Jeep struck a telephone pole, rolled over and was severely mangled—was able to walk away from the accident with minor injuries, to the shock of some rescue workers.
Ashley Martinez, 26, of Southampton was arrested by Southampton Town Police at 11:46 p.m. Sunday, shortly after the single-vehicle accident near the intersection on County Road 39 and Tuckahoe Road, and charged with misdemeanor DWI, as well as refusing to submit to a breath test, failing to maintain her lane and drinking alcohol while driving, all traffic violations.
Southampton Fire Department Public Information Officer Don King said Ms. Martinez had already exited the Jeep, which was destroyed beyond recognition, by the time emergency response crews arrived at the scene. Emergency responders with the Southampton Volunteer Ambulance transported Ms. Martinez via ambulance to Southampton Hospital, where she was treated for undisclosed minor injuries and later released into police custody.
“She’s very lucky,” Southampton Town Police Lieutenant Susan Ralph said on Monday morning about the driver.
The accident forced the closure of both eastbound lanes of County Road 39 at Shrubland Road as Southampton firefighters cleared the scene and mopped up fluids from the asphalt. Both lanes were reopened at 1:19 a.m., according to police.
Southampton Justice Court officials said Ms. Martinez was arraigned on Monday, and bail was set at $500.
