Multiple DWI Arrests Made In Southampton Town During And After Saturday Night Checkpoint

A 23-year-old South Carolina woman who was stopped during an East End DWI Task Force operation on Saturday night was found to be in possession of a loaded firearm and pepper spray, according to police.

Ashley Nicole Wheeler, of South Carolina was arrested by Southampton Town Police and members of the East End Task Force between 9:33 p.m. and 11:54 p.m. at a checkpoint on Flanders Road near Enterprise Zone Drive in Riverside and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a loaded firearm, a felony, along with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and unlawful possession of self-defense spray, both misdemeanors.

Ms. Wheeler was just one of many who were arrested by eight members of the East End DWI Task Force between 8 p.m. on Saturday and 4 a.m. on Sunday at various locations on the South Fork.

In Riverhead, police nabbed four people on misdemeanor DWI charges, and two others for charges including aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle also a misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.

According to police, the four charged with DWI were: Cynthia Hooghkirk, 53, of Aquebogue; Enrique Maricio-Rivera, 52, of Hampton Bays; Tawnee Peterson, 35, of Hampton Bays; and Cornelio Martinez, 30, of Riverhead.

Police said they also arrested Devon Clemons, 26, of Riverhead, who had 29 suspensions on his license, for second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, a misdemeanor, and a 26-year-old from South Carolina for unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.

The task force continued to patrol the area after midnight and screened an additional eight vehicles, and made two arrests for DWI, according to a press release from the Southampton Town Police Department.

Napolean Delossantos-Franco, 33, of Bridgehampton and Edyn Lopez, 27, of Riverhead were charged with DWI, according to the press release.

Those arrested by the task force were processed at Southampton Town Police headquarters and held overnight for arraignment.

The task force, a sector of the Suffolk County district attorney’s office, was a combined effort from the Southampton Town Police Department, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, the Southampton Village Police Department, the Sag Harbor Village Police Department and the East Hampton Town Police Department.
