Sep 4, 2018 11:22 AM

State Police arrested a 23-year-old man on Saturday on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation after they said he fired two shots from a handgun during an altercation at the powwow celebration.

According to a statement released by State Police on Sunday, Devon Trent of Mastic was involved in a physical altercation with other powwow attendees at about 8 p.m. Troopers who were part of a security detail heard a shot fired on the powwow grounds and responded.

Witnesses said Mr. Trent fired the shot and another person grabbed the gun away from him. In the ensuing struggle, a second shot was fired. The unidentified man then ran away from the scene with the gun, saying he was going to security, according to witnesses.

Nobody was injured by the gunfire, police said.

Mr. Trent was arrested, but the second man has not been identified, and the handgun was not recovered. The State Police forensic identity unit recovered two .40-caliber rounds and spent casings at the scene.

The investigation is still ongoing, led by the department’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Mr. Trent was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of marijuana, all felonies, as well as menacing, a misdemeanor. He was held for arraignment at Southampton Town Justice Court.
