Charlotte Winter of Southampton died at Southampton Hospital on January 12. She was 86.
Born in Ingolstadt, Germany, on February 1, 1928, to Krescenzia and Franz Schlicht, she was raised in war-torn Munich, Germany. She emigrated to the United States with her parents and husband, Roman Iwanyckyj, settling in New York, in 1953. Later, as a single parent raising two sons, John and Peter, she worked in the restaurant business, eventually saving enough money to purchase her first home in Bay Shore in 1964. In 1967, she remarried and went into the delicatessen business in the Islip area. After many successful years of business, she moved to Southampton in 1980 to open Town House Deli on Hampton Road. She also ran a successful deli/motel in Bolton Landing in the Lake George area, as well as the Old Mill restaurant on Nugent Street. In her later years, she worked with her sons in their delis in Miller Place and Bridgehampton.
Survivors said she always treated people with respect, adding “Mister” to a man’s name even when he would ask to be called, for instance, John. She would reply, “OK, Mr. John.” Her favorite term of endearment was “sweetie,” which the staff at Southampton Hospital heard often in recent years.
Ms. Winter loved her garden and even looked forward to pulling out the weeds. She was a good cook, baker and homemaker. She taught her children strong values, such as being a good person and sticking to your beliefs, survivors said. She was known to spoil her pets.
She is survived by a sister, Linda and husband Peter Horl of Water Mill; two sons, John Iwanycky and wife Maryann of Coram, and Peter Iwanyckyj and wife Mary of Water Mill; and five grandchildren, Derek Iwanycky and Krista Singh, both of Florida, and Judith, Deanna and Elise Iwanyckyj of Water Mill.
A funeral service took place on January 16 at the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton. Arrangements were under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
