Carol E. Kirkpatrick Spooner died on January 25 at the Shores at Peconic Landing in Greenport. She was 91.
Formerly of Southampton, she had lived for 12 years at Peconic Landing and for 45 years in Southampton. She was the wife of Richard Spooner, former mayor of Southampton Village, who survives her.
Ms. Spooner attended Jamaica High School and earned a bachelor’s degree at Cortland University and a master’s degree at St. Lawrence University. She taught physical education at Sewanhaka High School, Pierson High School in Sag Harbor and Shelter Island Public School.
An avid golfer, she won a New York State golf championship and played semi-pro golf for a short time. Her hobbies included painting, bridge, reading, knitting, rug-hooking and making lampshades. She was president of a Southampton Hospital advisory board, a Pink Lady volunteer, and president of the Women’s Association at the First Presbyterian Church of Southampton.
In addition to her husband, Ms. Spooner is survived by two sons, Richard Kirk Spooner and wife Joyce of Mastic, and Douglas Simpson Spooner and wife Donna of Virginia; a son-in-law, Roger W. Rose of Southold; eight grandchildren, Robert Bahner of Riverhead, Stephanie Rutledge of Texas, Roger Wesley Rose Jr. of Greenport, Brett Spooner of Virginia, Tyson Spooner of Texas, Sarah Rose Nesbitt of Southold, Kirk Spooner of Mastic and Trey Spooner of Virginia; and seven great-grandchildren, Taylor, Makayla, Ava, Aiden, Laila, Cameron and Harper. She was predeceased by a daughter, Jan E. Spooner Rose.
A funeral service was held on January 31 at Southold Presbyterian Church, followed by cremation.
