Police: Molotov Cocktail Placed In Front Of Southampton Highway Superintendent's House

Jun 29, 2011 10:22 AM

Southampton Town Highway Superintendent Alex Gregor told Town Police that two men placed a lighted Molotov cocktail in front of his East Quogue home on the evening of Thursday, June 16. The bomb did not ignite, police said.

According to a police report, a metallic light blue hatchback with two men inside drove east past Mr. Gregor’s home at about 7:30 p.m., travelling about 5 mph. The front-seat passenger then lit a Molotov cocktail in a beer bottle, opened his door
and placed the bomb on the street in front of Mr. Gregor’s residence, but the device did not ignite.

Town Police detectives and investigators from the Southampton Town fire marshal’s office responded to investigate.

The bottle contained an unidentified liquid and “something that appeared to be a wick sticking out of the top of the bottle that had char marks on it,” according to Detective Sergeant Randy Hintze. The device was recovered intact and sent to the Suffolk County Crime Laboratory in Hauppauge for analysis. Police said that, pending test results, they could not definitively say whether the liquid was flammable.

“It’s sad. I’m sad,” Mr. Gregor said this week. “I don’t want to say too much because I have to worry about my staff and my family. Myself? I can take it. I’m a big boy. But is it discouraging? Yeah, it definitely is. Is civility losing ground? Absolutely. Are blogs that let people comment anonymously a contributing factor? I think they are. Civility and decency are disappearing.”

Mr. Gregor said he got a good look at the subjects, whom he described as white men: a slight, narrow-shouldered driver and a stocky passenger with short, dark hair. Mr. Gregor said he sat in disbelief, thinking at first that the pair were lighting a firecracker. He said he then heard them laughing as they slowly drove away.

How do you know this is about leaves? Could be related to many things: labor problems, dispute with a contractor, or organized crime, or a personal dispute. But I agree with you it would be stupid if its over leaves.

It's stupid and dangerous no matter why they did it.

I don't agree with this type of action but think we should impeach this guy. I get so little from the town but snow removal and leaf pickup. Without the leaf pickup I think we should furlough workers!
By K2040 (8), Southampton on Jun 27, 11 5:46 PM
This is much more serious than a Halloween prank. To me, it's a premeditated attempt to 'do away' with Mr. Gregor: attempted murder.
The Southampton Highway Department has had a history of effigy hangings and death threats in the past. This little deal escalates the madness.
The people involved MUST be caught and brought to justice! There can be no excuse for not finding these guys.

Whether you line up on the same side of the ball or the other, agree with him on the issues or disagree, we should all agree that this is unacceptable behaviour towards a public official. Vigorous debate of ideas is one thing, and sometimes it is not so polite, but there should be no room in our civil society for that kind of thing, whatever the motivation.

Tomanoku...you really don't understand all that the hwy dept does, its a bunch more thanjust leaves and snow..lol Funny how 8 words into your post you're talking about getting rid of him...hmmmm

HB ..Maybe you should take some adult literacy classes before you go around and lecture people on what the highway department does. You might want to reread what I wrote in another post on another story before you make libelous and inappropriate insinuations about people.

Ok I am embarrassed and put out my sincerest apologies to Toma Noku, my original post should have been directed at k2040. If I see you on the street Toma, I will buy you a beer and give you a big hug. K2040 get a clue. Once again Toma Noku, I am sorry for initially calling you out for K2040's uninformed comment.

Come on! A "Molotov Cocktail" in a BEER bottle PLACED on the road. A more apt headline would be "Beer Bottle Set In Front of Highway Superintendent's House".

There isn't even a mention of what the beer bottle was fllled with. Since it "failed to ignite" one wonders if it was filled with . . . beer (or, perhaps, pee-pee, the perps having been motivated by the consumption of the beer.)

The Town Police construction of the incident sure does make for a better headline, though.

Highhatsize, I bet you are the only one who guessed correctly on this one ! The article states that the liquid was of unknown origin and teats were being conducted to see if it was flammable, how many detectives does it take to see if pee burns ? Any fingerprints on the bottle? Looks like a big overeaction to a stupid childish prank ...

Gregor was elected to change a department that had grown fat and lazy under previous leadership which had spent more time golfing than doing the work needed. It's a pity too many are focusing on leaves and not enough on some of the good. This was a horrible year for snow and I thought the roads were great. I notice lots of new yellow striping which was sorely needed. Some dangerous sections of roadway have been realigned or improved in other ways. Let's give this guy a chance. He's trying to get ...more

I have to agree. Trying to fix a broken system after all those years isn't going to be easy or popular.

Seems like people are associating the Molotov cocktail to the leaf program. The incident at Mr. Gregor's house occurred on June 16. His latest version of the leaf program he announced on Wednesday June 22. The bagging version that is. So I find the association with the leaf program less likely as it could not have been a reaction to something not yet announced to the public. Again there are other possibilities out there. But that also doesnot justify the attack.
By Toma Noku (596), uptown on Jun 28, 11 12:47 PM
highhatsize notwithstanding, but

Molotov cocktail
A makeshift bomb made of a breakable container filled with flammable liquid and provided with a usually rag wick that is lighted just before being hurled.

By local69 (65), southampton on Jun 28, 11 1:47 PM
Apparently, too lazy to hurl it.

Must have been the golfers...

Sad. Cowardly. Reckless.
Glad that Mr. Gregor and his family are ok. We can disagree without violence, folks. I hope that we are still capable of that.

yup, look at Mr. Z, someone said it here somewhere else, your posts after 10:30 at night take on a weird sort of dark humor that only you understand. Reminds me of an old saying "This is one of the disadvantages of wine: it makes a man mistake words for thought. ~Samuel Johnson"

Or, it's simply not on your wavelength.

I'll admit I don't find Dane Cook the least bit funny, myself.

Recently, I've been reminded of this:

"There is no more surer, more subtler means of overturning the existing basis of society than to debauch the currency. The process (of inflating) engages all of the hidden forces of economics on the side of destruction and does it in a manner that not one man in a million can diagnose it"
