The driver of a garbage truck was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after his vehicle overturned at the corner of Montauk Highway and East Tiana Road shortly before 6 a.m. on Friday, according to Southampton Town Police.

There were no passengers in the truck, which is owned by Riverhead Sanitation and Carting in Bohemia, and no other vehicles were involved in the accident, police said. The truck was heading west on Montauk Highway and tipped after the driver, who has not been identified, attempted to make a left turn onto East Tiana Road.

The driver was transported by ambulance to the Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for the treatment of undisclosed injuries, according to authorities.

Officials with Riverhead Sanitation and Carting could not be reached for comment this week.

East Tiana Road was shut down to vehicular traffic between Hyler Drive and Montauk Highway until about 10 a.m. Friday as workers cleared the scene. Police said several tow trucks were used to lift the truck upright and remove it from the site. It does not appear that the truck lost any garbage during the accident.

Southampton Town Police could not immediately say what caused the crash.
