Public Hearing Set For Lobster Inn Property Purchase

The community will be sounding off next month on the Southampton Town Board’s proposal to purchase a small group of parcels that sit on nearly 10 acres in Shinnecock Hills, and which most recently housed the Lobster Grille Inn.

A pair of public hearings, set for June 12 at 6 p.m. at Town Hall, will give the community the chance to express its support or opposition to the proposal.

Officials hope to use the property—owned by Peconic Bay Marina LLC and Peconic Bay Residence LLC—as a combination public marina, shellfish hatchery and preserved space, but possibly leaving room for a small privately owned restaurant. It was not clear as of this week how much the town will pay for the property.

The property is currently being listed by David Donohue of Douglas Elliman for $9.9 million.

One of the public hearings will focus on the town’s purchase—which will be paid for using multiple fund sources, including the community preservation fund. The second hearing will home in on the proposal for Manna Fish Farms to sell the development rights to the town from a 4.75 piece of the parcel it intends to buy for an aquaculture farm.

Manna Fish Farms is a company whose mission is to sustainability produce seafood to meet the food demands of our growing U.S. population and is owned by Donna Lanzetta of East Quogue. The town is seeking to purchase the development rights so the intended use, as an aquaculture farm, remains permanent. It was not immediately clear how many development rights were being sold or what they would cost.
