Evelyn MacDonald died of natural causes on January 22 at the home of her daughter in Montauk. She was 89.
Born on April 19, 1924, to Sarah and Thomas Petrone, Ms. MacDonald was raised in Ossining. Following World War II, she met and married Martin, known as “Mac,” H. MacDonald. The couple settled in Thornwood. They had a daughter, Dianne, and a son, Thomas, who predeceased them. For the past seven years, she and her husband lived with their daughter in Montauk.
In addition to raising her children, Ms. MacDonald worked in retail for more than 20 years at Roger’s Fashion Barn. She loved her job and delighted in helping local women find the latest trends, her family said, adding that she often joked that in her next life she would be a “fashionista” and a Hollywood gossip columnist. When she wasn’t working, she enjoyed boating on Long Island Sound, walking the beaches of Montauk and spending time with her extended family, which includes Norm MacDonald, Gary MacDonald, Bob MacDonald and Jean MacDonald Altz and her family, all from Westchester, and Lee Coffey and his family from California. A son, Thomas, predeceased her.
She also leaves behind many caregivers, Jessica Carlson, Debbie Carey, Angela Daunt, Tereza Jirsova, Lydell Margraf, Steve Margraf, Patti McCann and Jeanne Stevens.
Interment will be at the family plot in Kensico Cemetery in Westchester. A memorial will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Montauk Medical Center, 699 Montauk Highway, Montauk, NY 11954, the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org, or to a favorite charity.
