Ruth Oldberg Peters of Quogue died on December 20 in Vero Beach, Florida. She was 83.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, on October 23, 1930, she graduated from the University of Michigan, where she was president of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She launched and ran a successful business called Artfinders in Charlotte, North Carolina. After moving to Washington, DC, she also worked as a realtor for Vicky Bagley Real Estate for eight years. She loved walking her dog “Gilligan,” playing tennis, swimming, golfing, painting, decorating and gardening. She was a member of the Quogue Library Board, the Garden Club, the Quogue Beach Club and the Quogue Field Club.
Ms. Peters is survived by two daughters, Diane Hannon Downey Stover and husband Nicholas of Michigan and Ellen Nasi and husband Andrea of Arizona; a son, William Downey of North Carolina; a brother, Terry Oldberg and wife Victoria; five grandchildren, Reilly, Chance, John, Livia and Willy; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Alan Witham Peters; her parents, Sidney and Katherine Hannon Oldberg; and a sister, Karin Oldberg Shaw.
Memorial donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10004. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 3, at the Quogue Chapel; the Rev. Charles Cary of the Westhampton Presbyterian Church will be officiating. A reception at the Quogue Field Club will follow.
