Organizers: Sunday's Black Lives Matter Protest Is First Of Several To Come On East End

Jul 13, 2016 9:19 AM

More than 100 people from across Long Island gathered in Riverside and Riverhead on Sunday afternoon, marking the first in a series of Black Lives Matter protests being organized on the East End.

Protesters holding handmade signs, some of which read “No Justice, No Peace,” and “R.I.P. Philando Castile and Alton Sterling,” gathered around 12:30 p.m. on both sides of Peconic Avenue—the south side of the street runs through Riverside—before marching east on Main Street and finishing up at Riverhead Town Hall. Southampton Town Police monitored the protest, which did not require any road closures, from Peconic Avenue.

Vanessa Vascez-Corleone, 28, of Riverhead said she organized Sunday’s protest because she and her friends were upset by two recent events: the death of Alton Sterling, the 37-year-old black man from Louisiana who was fatally shot by police after being pinned to the ground by two Baton Rouge officers on July 5, and the killing of five Dallas police officers at a Black Lives Matter protest held two days later, on July 7.

That protest was held in the wake of a second shooting of a black man by police, with the second incident occurring on July 6 when Philando Castile, a 32-year-old black man, was shot and killed by officers in Falcon Heights, Minnesota, following a routine traffic stop.

“We’re not against the police,” Ms. Vascez-Corleone said. “We know there are good police and we want the police to do their jobs. We just don’t want to be killed in the process.”

She said she was happy that Sunday’s protest stayed peaceful—no arrests were reported by Riverhead Town Police—because its purpose was to send a message that violence is not the answer.

Noting the strong outpouring of support Sunday, Ms. Vascez-Corleone said she is planning another protest, with this one tentatively scheduled for this coming Sunday, July 17, in East Hampton. She said the protest will be held near the Stop & Shop on Newtown Lane in East Hampton Village, though an exact time had not yet been finalized as of Tuesday afternoon.

“We’re definitely going to be keeping this going,” said Ms. Vascez-Corleone, noting that she also wants to have other protests in Southampton Town—possibly in Hampton Bays, Sag Harbor or Southampton Village—in the next few weeks.

Salvatore King of Riverhead, who participated in Sunday’s event and is helping organize this weekend’s protest in East Hampton Village, said it is important for protesters to share their message on the South Fork, noting that racism is alive and well in the region.

“A lot of people were saying negative things to us, calling us the N-word, but we were trying to be peaceful,” Mr. King said on Tuesday about the prior weekend’s march through Riverhead Town. “And this is the reason we were doing [the protest]. It’s because of situations like that.”

He added that, in recent days, he has seen a lot of locals posting racist comments in response to Sunday’s gathering that began in Riverside. “It’s an eye-opener because it’s people from our community,” Mr. King said.

In spite of the negativity, both Mr. King and Ms. Vascez-Corleone said it felt good when members of other ethnic groups joined in their march. “People from every culture came to support us,” Ms. Vascez-Corleone said. “It raised a lot of awareness.”

“There were a lot of white people out there, and Hispanics, with us,” Mr. King added. “When you see a Caucasian holding up a Black Lives Matter sign, you know it’s not just our issue. It’s an American issue.”

Patricia Robinson of Westhampton, who said she was unaware of Sunday’s protest until driving through the area, said she immediately parked her car and joined in. “I was just driving through Riverhead and there was a lot of traffic, and I saw it,” she said of the protest. “I parked my car and started to participate.”

Ms. Robinson, who describes herself as an ally to the Black Lives Matter movement, explained that she was happy to see that the protest remained peaceful.

“There was a powerful energy in the group,” Ms. Robinson said. “I could feel it. It was intense for me when I got out of the car and joined … People were sharing stories about how their families have been affected by police situations or issues.”

Is anything more pathetic than seeing BLM continue their protests the night after the tragic event in Dallas. They couldn't even wait 2 days to show a little empathy for the dead and injured police. Disgusting, and they are doing nothing to heal race relations - only making them worse.
By HamptonDad (185), Hampton Bays on Jul 12, 16 10:43 PM
Actually you don't know what BLM is doing, protesting is just one aspect. How many officers showed any condolences to the family of the two killed men? How many officers stood up against the bad cops that were making this a growing issue? Were you disgusted every time you heard about another police killing for a routine traffic stop? No you have the privilege of sitting back, because it's not a problem that concerns you on a daily. You go walk around as a black male for one day, just following your ...more

Oddly enough, the wholesale slaughtering of cops made it a tad difficult. You do your kids and black people at large a disservice by trying to use your skin color as a handicap. Telling how everyone in the country became exponentially more racist the moment a black president was elected. "Argue for your limitations and behold, they are yours"

You don't know what I don't know. I know that BLM and all it's supporters should just wait until all the facts are out before starting all the BS. Yeah, the video in Minnesota looks bad and probably the cop over reacted and will be prosecuted and go to jail. But what about Baton Rouge? If Alton Sterling was cooperating with the police, why were the two policemen and him struggling on the ground? Why did he not just put his hands out and be cuffed. It's interesting that you say that the Minnesota video looks bad and that the officer may be prosecuted and go to Jail. The problem is, that's not happening and that is why there is anger. All I can say is if that video wan't available, it wouldn't even be looked at.

Folks this is about racism. If you can't empathize with the black community while they protest calmly for fair treatment under the umbrella of BLM,, than you really need to take a hard look at yourself and just try to imagine yourself as a person of color.

The CDC also found that from 1999 to 2013, the police killed almost twice the number of whites compared to blacks, 3,160 and 1,724, respectively.

Activists promptly note that whites account for nearly 65 percent of the population and that, therefore, one would expect whites to comprise most of those killed by cops. ...more

By lightfoot (8), southampton on Jul 14, 16 9:01 PM
Castile had a permit to carry, it's an open carry state. He volunteered that information to the officer, he was going to get the ID and his license to carry when he was shot 4 times. Also in the case of Sterling, it's an open carry state, but he didn't have a license to carry.

Sterling was a convicted sex offender felon with a rap sheet a mile long and an open warrant, so no he would not be allowed to have a gun license of any kind. Clearly that didn't stop him from illegally having a gun, threatening someone with the gun, and then trying to pull it out of his pocket while fighting on the ground with two officers after a taser failed to stop him. Interesting choice of person BLM has picked to act as its martyred hero.

So now they are coming to East Hampton on Sunday at noon to hold another protest for 2 hours. Why are people from Riverhead and farther up island coming to another community which they have absolutely no ties to in order to shut down their roads with a protest that is not directly related to this community?? Clearly the point is not to actually protest anything, but rather to just disrupt and harass other people and create chaos.

So far the protest in Riverhead, Easthampton & Bridgehampton, have not been disgusting, Actually a diverse group of people. By the way BLM has nothing to do with what's happened, in Dallas you had an individual that had mental issues and most likely angry too, that would use an opportunity to follow thru on this path. Pretty much the same for Baton Rouge, hate filled individual with issues. It's funny, there was a shooting at a court in-between these two events, I believe July 11th, 2 bailiffs ...more

BLM had everything to do with what happened in Dallas and Louisiana. One would have to be either delusional or a complete moron not to be able to put the two together. BLM supporters have been recorded during their protests calling for the blood of police officers. Anyone that aligns themselves with BLM should be ashamed of themselves. The only thing diverse about the crowds at the BLM rallies out here is the color of their skin, the content of their characters are the same -- ignorant troublemakers.

Not delusional nor a moron, there are bad apples in every group, including police officers, so you just made my point. We know the vast amount of officers do there job, but it's the bad apples that have caused the problem. Now you saw a protest on TV and you heard some people in that group calling for "blood of officers", I better check Youtube because I never saw that, between CNN, FOX, MSNBC and ABC covering the protests. My point, now the entire BLM movement wants cops dead, really??? 99% of ...more

Actually, your point was that BLM had nothing to do with the killing of those police officers. The fact is that BLM was cited specifically as a primary cause for the actions of those shooters, by those shooters. If that is not a direct causual link then I don't know what is. There is plenty of footage out there showing BLM supporters calling for the death of police officers. Luckily, the major media outlets had enough sense not to broadcast these statements thereby inciting more nut jobs. Whether ...more
