Monday Accident Injures One, Forces Closure Of Speonk-Riverhead Road On Monday

Dec 20, 2017 10:13 AM

One driver suffered minor injuries and a stretch of Speonk-Riverhead Road was closed for little more than an hour following a two-car crash near the Suffolk County Community College campus in Northampton on Monday morning.

Southampton Town Police said Sarah Huneault, 20, of Riverhead was driving a 2011 Kia Sportage southbound on Speonk-Riverhead Road at 10:49 a.m. when a 2002 Ford SUV being driven by Jordan Claeson, 19, of Ronkonkoma, pulled out from campus exit. As Mr. Claeson pulled out, police said, he struck Ms. Huneault’s vehicle on the passenger side, causing it to roll over.

Crews from the Flanders-Northampton Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the scene and were able to extract Ms. Huneault from her vehicle, and then transported her to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead.

Mr. Claeson, who was not injured in the accident, was ticketed for failing to yield to the right of way, a violation, police said, adding that speed did not appear to be a contributing factor to the accident.

Speonk-Riverhead Road was reopened around noon on Monday, according to police.

Ron Fisher of Flanders, who said that Ms. Huneault had borrowed his Kia that was involved in the accident, said she was taken to the hospital as a precaution. He added that she underwent X-rays before being discharged later the same day.

“She was startled,” Mr. Fisher said on Monday. “She had never been in an accident before.”
