Sag Harbor to Host Superintendent Search Forum

Pierson Middle High School

What makes an effective school district superintendent?

That is the question the Sag Harbor School District Board of Education is asking residents to help answer during a public forum on Monday, September 16, at 6:30 p.m. as the board continues its search for a new chief officer to lead the district once current Superintendent Katy Graves officially retires next year.

In April, Ms. Graves, 58, announced her retirement after five years in the district. Her current salary is $233,175. Her retirement will officially begin on January 6, 2020.

Monday’s forum, to be held in the Pierson Middle-High School auditorium, will be led by School Leadership LLC, the firm the Board of Education has contracted with to lead the search for a new superintendent. School Leadership officials will update the public on the firm’s progress and during the meeting will provide an estimated timetable for conducting the search.

The rest of the session will be devoted to hearing from the public on what would attract a highly qualified educator to seek the superintendent position in Sag Harbor, what they see as major leadership challenges coming down the road, and what kind of professional and personal qualities they hope the next superintendent will possess.

Board members have also asked community members to participate in a survey created by School Leadership, the results of which will also be used to inform the search process moving forward. Residents can participate in the survey by visiting the school’s website at sagharborschools.org.
