Driver Arrested After Striking Pole In Shinnecock Hills

Jul 5, 2011 5:42 PM

A New Jersey man was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs following a single-car crash late Tuesday morning on Montauk Highway near South Beach Drive in Shinnecock Hills, according to Southampton Town Police Sergeant Howard Kalb.

Brian Roche, 24, was driving a pickup truck at about 11:30 a.m. when his truck struck a telephone pole, splitting the pole in two. He was not injured, police said.

Mr. Roche was charged with driving while his ability was impaired by drugs and two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, both misdemeanors, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation, according to police.

Sgt. Kalb said authorities are still investigating what drug was in Mr. Roche’s system. He was in possession of cocaine and a controlled prescription drug whose name was not immediately available, police said. The sergeant said Mr. Roche might also have been ticketed for vehicle and traffic violations, but could not say for certain because the defendant was still being processed.

Mr. Roche was to be held overnight at police headquarters for a Wednesday arraignment in Southampton Town Justice Court, police said.

I would like to express my appreciation to the pole for stopping this character before he got any closer to where my family or friends were driving.

A misdeameanor for behavior that's tantamount to attempted negligent homicide. No wonder we have so many drunk and drugged drivers around.
