Justice Court candidates profiled

Oct 21, 2008 12:33 PM

Though she was the top Democratic vote-getter in last year’s general election, Andrea Schiavoni came up short in her bid to become Southampton Town’s fourth justice, losing to Republican Edward Burke.

Now, Ms. Schiavoni, a mediation attorney from Sag Harbor, is running again, this time against veteran Justice Thomas DeMayo, a Republican with a total of 16 years on the town bench.

Ms. Schiavoni has argued that the objectives of the fourth justice position created in 2007 have not been met and has pledged to work toward a more efficiently run court. On the stump, she has said that the added cost of the fourth judge has not been justified in that the court docket has not been significantly reduced. Ms. Schiavoni has advocated for two full-time judges to replace the part-time rotation now in place.

Justice DeMayo argues that the court has outgrown its current location at Town Hall and says that when the court moves to Jackson Avenue at Hampton Bays, it will run more efficiently and be better equipped to deal with the enormous case load and congestion currently plaguing it.

Town justices are elected to a four-year term and are paid an annual salary of $67,100, plus full benefits.

Thomas DeMayo

Thomas J. DeMayo, the incumbent, has been a resident of the East End for 54 years and has maintained a general law practice in Hampton Bays since 1978.

Born in the Bronx and raised in Flanders, Justice DeMayo has served 16 years on the town bench, from 1978 to1986 and then again from 2000 until the present. He also serves as an associate judge for the Village of Quogue.

After graduating from Southampton College in 1970 with a degree in history, Justice DeMayo earned his law degree from Hofstra University in 1973. He began his career as an assistant district attorney for Suffolk County assigned to East End courts from 1974 to 1976. Justice DeMayo has worked as an assistant town attorney for Southampton and was assigned to the Zoning Board of Appeals from 1976 to 1977. He is also a former instructor for the Suffolk County Police Department.

He is also a member and past president of the Hampton Bays Rotary Club as well as a former board member of the Westhampton Beach School District. Justice DeMayo is a member of the New York Bar Association and the Suffolk County Bar Association.

Justice DeMayo is running on the Republican and Conservative party lines and has the endorsements of the Southampton and the Village of Quogue Patrolman’s Benevolent Association.

Justice DeMayo married his wife Randi Lynn in 1977. They have two children.

Andrea Schiavoni

Andrea Harum Schiavoni, a successful mediation attorney in Sag Harbor, is a licensed member of the state bars of New York, Florida and of the District of Columbia. After graduating from the University of Miami in 1986, Ms. Schiavoni earned her law degree from Whittier College of Law in Los Angeles, also receiving a grant in Juvenile Justice.

Though her early legal experience began in Los Angeles and Florida, Ms. Schiavoni is a lifelong resident of Southampton Town. In 1963, her parents bought a home in North Haven where she spent all of her summers.

Ms. Schiavoni gained experience in juvenile and gang matters while working in the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s office. She also handled cases of abuse and neglect in the Los Angeles County Dependency Court.

Ms. Schiavoni began her career as a litigator in Florida at the law firm her father, Albert E. Harum Jr., established in 1966. Practicing with her father, Ms. Schiavoni handled workers’ compensation and social security claims as well as cases relating to employment discrimination.

Ms. Schiavoni worked in the office of Florida State Attorney Janet Reno in the narcotics division and was also a clerk in the office of Chief Family Court Judge William Gladstone in Miami. Upon the death of her father in 1997, Ms. Schiavoni became the president of her father’s firm, renamed Harum & Harum, with a focus on juvenile and family law on a pro-bono basis. In 2001, Ms. Schiavoni opened an office in Sag Harbor where she now devotes her time to matters of mediation.

Ms. Schiavoni has tried more than 1,000 cases on behalf of and against major corporations such as Dupont, AT&T, American Airlines, and Florida Power and Light. She has also helped to draft legislation with State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr. and has lectured around the state.

Along with the Democratic Party, Ms. Schiavoni has the endorsements of the Independence, Working Families, and Integrity parties.

Ms. Schiavoni has also been endorsed by U.S. Representative Tim Bishop, County Executive Steve Levy, Suffolk County Legislator Kate Browning, Sag Harbor Mayor Gregory Ferraris, and Southampton Town Councilwoman Anna Throne-Holst.

Ms. Schiavoni, and her husband Tommy John Schiavoni, have two children.

When not running for office or settling legal disputes, Ms. Schiavoni, a classically trained musician and jazz vocalist, fronts a local rock band, Clamor.
