Barbara Osborn Babinski Meyer died at her Wainscott home, surrounded by her loving family, on August 31 after a brief illness. She was 89.
The daughter of Elisha and Ella Osborn, she was born on December 9, 1924, in Wainscott, where she spent almost all of her life. A member of the very first class at the Wainscott School and a graduate of East Hampton High School, Ms. Meyer went on to earn a teaching degree at the State Teacher’s College at New Paltz. After teaching for a few years in Bridgehampton, she met and married Bill Babinski, who had come home to work on his family’s farm after serving in the Navy during World War II. She continued her teaching career at Springs School. They had two children, William, known as “Andy,” and Jane. Mr. Babinski died in 1963.
In 1976, Ms. Meyer married Henry von L. Meyer Jr., a summer resident and family friend of many years.
She was active in many local organizations, including the Wainscott Sewing Society, the Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church and multiple bridge clubs. In addition, she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a retired teachers association. Ms. Meyer is survived by her two children, Andy Babinski and Jane Weigley and husband Jim; five grandchildren, Lisa Babinski and husband Steve Centalonza, Billy Babinski and wife Mary Jo, Michael Weigley and wife Arlie, and Lindsay and Jill Weigley; five great-grandchildren, Lucas, Fallon and Dylan Centalonza and William and Hunter Babinski. She is also survived by Tom and Betsy Meyer and their sons Tom Jr. and Bill and their wives and children. Her stepson, Hank Meyer, predeceased her, but she is survived by his sons, Brooke and Henry, and Henry’s wife and two sons.
A private burial was held on Friday, September 5, at the Wainscott Cemetery. A memorial service took place on September 6 at the Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church.
