Westhampton Beach Board Appoints Gonce As Permanent Police Chief

Jun 8, 2016 1:15 PM

Westhampton Beach Village Police Chief Trevor Gonce can drop the term “provisional” from his title.

The chief, who has been serving as provisional chief since December 2014, was appointed the village’s permanent chief of police in a unanimous vote by the Village Board last Thursday night, June 2, after Mayor Maria Moore announced that he had passed the Suffolk County Civil Service Police Chief exam on a second try.

Chief Gonce, who attends most of the board’s monthly meetings, told the nearly two dozen people in attendance last Thursday that he was happy to be at the helm of the department, adding that he intends to continue focusing on ongoing upgrades that are designed to bring his force into the future.

“I wanted to say thank you to the board for appointing me and for having faith in me passing the test,” Chief Gonce said. “I want to continue moving the department in a forward direction and taking the village where it should be. I think we are doing a great job working together and we will continue to do so.”

Chief Gonce was tapped by the Village Board in December 2014 to replace former longtime Police Chief Raymond Dean, who abruptly retired from the post six months earlier. Chief Gonce has been employed with the Westhampton Beach Police Department for more than 20 years, being promoted to sergeant in 2003 and lieutenant in 2007. He was briefly demoted back to sergeant, amid controversy surrounding a former deputy mayor, before being reinstated as lieutenant in 2010.

In March 2015, three months after being appointed provisional chief, Chief Gonce took the chief’s exam, but did not earn a high enough score to earn the title. He retook the exam this March and recently learned that he passed the test, scoring a 79.

Chief Gonce graduated from Westhampton Beach High School in 1991, and has worked for the Village Police since 1995. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In 2012, Chief Gonce completed the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

The vote to make Chief Gonce the permanent chief of police was unanimous and took effect Friday, June 3.

According to Westhampton Beach Village Clerk Elizabeth Lindtvit, Chief Gonce will continue to work under his current contract for provisional chief, earning $148,491 a year, until he negotiates a new accord with the trustees. His current salary was determined by adding $10,000 a year to his lieutenant salary.

“We all know Trevor Gonce has been acting as our provisional chief of police, and he has been doing a wonderful job running the department,” Ms. Moore said during last week’s meeting. “We are pleased to announce that he has passed his chief exam and we are able to appoint him as our chief. We are happy to have him on our team.”

Erin: Where is coverage of the board's passage of an agreement with the East End Eruv Assn.? The board refuses to reveal the agreement until it has been signed. Residents are being denied this vital information that cedes control of 46 utility poles to EEEA, LIPA and Verizon.

Illogically, a paragraphs on the deal says the agreement "does not create or recognize a religious boundary" when that is exactly what it does.

Permanent religious markers on public property were forbidden ...more
