New homeless sex offender plan in the works at county level

Aug 4, 2010 1:27 PM

The current push to devise a new system for housing homeless sex offenders comes as the result of a prolonged and contentious battle. A non-profit law firm called Empire Justice Center, on behalf of a group of homeless sex offenders, filed an action in New York State Supreme Court in 2009 stating that the trailers do not meet the minimum standards for emergency housing because they lack showers. An administrative law judge ruled that the county would have to provide on-site showers in February, according to Mr. Schneiderman.

In May, Suffolk County moved a new trailer, one equipped with showers, to the site of Westhampton trailer. But Southampton Town officials, outraged after the new trailer was moved to the site overnight and without warning, successfully secured a restraining order that bars the county from using it.

In June, Empire Justice Center filed a follow-up petition seeking to get the Suffolk County Department of Social Services to comply with the February ruling.

Dan Aug, a spokesman for Mr. Levy, did not immediately return calls seeking comment on Wednesday morning.
