Illegal Behavior

During the May 9 Southampton Village Board meeting, I criticized Bill Manger and his trustees for their refusal to eliminate post-service lifetime benefits, granting themselves pay raises, and a contentious zoning code change. This zone change was pushed through, clearly violating New York State law, which mandates an additional public hearing if any changes are made to the original proposed local law. Mr. Manger responded with a tirade, complete with yelling, pointing and aggressive gesticulations. His behavior was so unsettling that even Gina Arresta, whom The Southampton Press called “combative” in a 2020 editorial, intervened to calm him down. Mr. ... by Staff Writer

Illness in Academia

My response to Dick Sheehan’s letter [“Who Is Sick?” Letters, May 9] is that we are both familiar with what campus demonstrations looked like, having lived through the unrest of the late 1960s. I myself participated in the post-Kent State shootings demonstrations in Washington, D.C. I am far from naive about student passion and idealism. Those of us back then were fighting to save ourselves and our country from a foreign war whose necessity was deeply disagreed with. Today’s student rebellion, while as passionate, has devolved into disruptive actions that demonize fellow students for their race and religion. There is ... by Staff Writer

A Moral Absolute

It may come as a surprise to see an analogy drawn between jurisprudence and astrophysics. The science of astrophysics is derived from carefully rendered and proven mathematical equations. Human curiosity draws us ineluctably to the moment when our universe was created, when a spark of light was introduced into the void and thereafter expanded exponentially. What we are coming to understand is that the universe is mathematically perfect. And it follows from this that what we call truth must also be mathematically perfect. This is what gives it symmetry and resonance. The introduction of chaos may distort truth but can ... by Staff Writer

Landscape Reward

Ruth Ann Rosenthal’s article “Plant Natives for a Resilient Future” [Residence, May 2] was timely and inspirational. The native plants she listed are beautiful and all are very deer resistant. There are many plants native to our area that we have never seen. Online nurseries, including Prairemoon Nursery and Prairie Nursery, are quite educational and comprehensive, discussing the plants, characteristics, history, adaptability, benefits and native ranges. You can also get a Deer Resistant Meadow Seed Mix from Ernst Seeds. Rent a sod cutter and remove an area of lawn that is not needed, or completely eradicate an area of invasive ... by Staff Writer

The Best Chance

We face one of the most important elections in our nation’s history this year, and every sub-election is important. Of course, everyone is watching the Biden/Trump rematch. I certainly hope you look closely and realize that Joe Biden is the obvious choice for what he has done and will do. Donald Trump is another matter. Wherever one looks — in newspapers, magazines, on TV shows — we hear that our democracy is at risk. I agree. These are important and complicated concepts, and they are essentially contested. That is, they have different meanings for different people. We have been working ... by Staff Writer

Time To ‘Adopt-a-Patch’

The Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt is again offering an opportunity for residents to Adopt-a-Patch at Vineyard Field, behind the South Fork Natural History Museum in Bridgehampton. The goal of the program is to restore the field, which has been overgrown with invasive autumn olive shrubs. Adopt-a-Patch was initiated in 2021 in which a volunteer is allotted a section of the field (their “patch”) where they will cut back any new sprouts at least once a month during the growing season. The organization has learned after years of mowing trails that repetitive cutting eradicates this noxious plant. Those interested ... by Staff Writer
