The historic Village Latch Inn in Southampton Village is on the market once again, with an asking price of $23 million.
The sale of the inn, which sits on 5.5 acres off Hill Street, is now being handled exclusively by Douglas Elliman. It has been marketed in the past as an opportunity to be included in revitalization efforts for the business district.
Owned by Marta and Martin White for almost 40 years, the inn is known for its Great-Gatsby-esque appearance. Operated as a hotel since 1901, it has been visited by Vice President Joe Biden, former Vice President Al Gore, former First Lady Jackie Kennedy, and actors Anne Hathaway, Bill Murray and Isabella Rossellini, among others.
The property has eight buildings, including the Terry Cottage, the Potting Shed, the two “Homestead” buildings that house guests, the Vice Presidential Suite, a Victorian greenhouse and a seventh, unnamed building.
The main house was designed by architect Stanford White and originally served as the Grand Annex of the famed Irving Hotel, which was across the street. With its purchase by current owners Marta and Martin White in 1974, the Grand Annex was saved from the fate of the Irving Hotel, which was used as a “controlled-burn house” for a fire department drill.
“The Village Latch is an iconic establishment in the Hamptons, and this is a rare opportunity to make your mark on a piece of living history,” said Esther Paster of Douglas Elliman in a press release this week.
“Marta and Martin poured their hearts and souls into the property. Ideally, they would like to see it bought by someone who understands the value of historic preservation, and who has the vision to tastefully bring a modern sensibility to the property.”
The grounds include a heated swimming pool and tennis court. A change of zone application has been filed for 76 rooms, a spa, restaurant, and other amenities, Douglas Elliman noted.
