‘Limited Time Only’ Pop-Up Street Art Exhibition Opens In Southampton

author on Jul 18, 2017

Jason Poremba has his own architecture firm, volunteers as a firefighter and is a full-time dad, but he still finds time to engage in and promote a passion of his: accessible art.

As a moonlighting pop-up street artist, Mr. Poremba is known around Southampton for his engaging and at times social experiment-like exhibitions and art. Usually, he hangs his paintings in various locations around Southampton Village, posts pictures of them to social media, and challenges people to find them. In 2014, he planted “selfie spot” signs around the village and instructed people to take a photo of themselves with a unique Southampton view, and then upload the picture to Instagram.

But this year, Mr. Poremba sought to display his and other street artists’ work in a less transient manner for those who would like a chance to simply view the art. The exhibition, aptly named “Limited Time Only,” brings street art off the streets and into the Guerrilla Art Gallery.

While the pop-up gallery makes it easier for fans to find and view his art—one of Mr. Poremba’s friends is lending a space on Windmill Lane—the real inspiration behind the exhibition was the idea of accessible art, which benefits both the viewer and the artist. This means that the artists will be able to keep their profits, without worrying about having a certain percentage to pay to a gallery, Mr. Poremba said. “All of the pieces are under one thousand dollars,” he added. “It’s an opportunity to bring all the artists together, who have similar mindsets.”

Mr. Poremba finds interesting ways to wedge art into his daily life, even with a busy schedule. “My wife will ask me to run down to the basement to get paper towels, and 45 minutes or an hour later she’ll ask where I went and I’ll have three more paintings lined up,” he said.

Works from street artists such as Whisbe, known for his mugshot gummy bear pieces, and Sean Sullivan, who makes portraits stand out in a graffiti-like backdrop, will be featured.

“Limited Time Only” will be on display at Guerrilla Art Gallery, 16 Windmill Lane, Southampton, from July 21 to 30 from noon to 9 p.m. daily, with a special event happening from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 22.
