Parrish Art Museum announces receipt of $1 million donation and two grants

author on Sep 29, 2010

Parrish Art Museum officials announced on Monday that the museum has received a $1 million gift and two grants totaling more than $136,000.

The $1 million donation, from the Century Arts Foundation, will go toward the Parrish’s capital campaign, which is helping to fund construction of the new building in Water Mill, where ground was broken in July. Total funds raised for the 34,500-square-foot future facility now stand at $18.7 million, with $7.5 million left to be raised, according to a press release issued by the Parrish.

The donor is described in the release as a private organization based in Arizona that seeks to “facilitate the development of new and diverse cultural and artistic opportunities in the United States and Mexico.”

Separate from the gift, two recently won grants are intended to help the Parrish further its mission of celebrating the local artistic heritage. One, a three-year grant for $86,220, is from the Institute for Museum and Library Services as part of its Museums for America grant program. The other is a $50,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation as part of its American Art Renewal Fund. The former is to be used for the creation of a virtual community narrative archive, “Your East End Stories,” and improving the museum’s East End Stories website. The latter is for general use, according to a museum press release.

In addition to the new income, the Parrish has also announced the election of four new trustees to its board of directors: Jay B. Goldberg of Jericho, H. Peter Haveles Jr. of New York City and Sag Harbor, Michele Chevallier Pesner of New York City and East Hampton, and Adam Sender of New York City and Noyac. Also, Mildred C. Brinn, chairwoman emeritus, has been appointed a voting member of the museum board, and Alvin Chereskin, board chairman, has been awarded a life trusteeship.
