Moran Studio open to the public

author on Dec 7, 2009

The studio of Thomas Moran, 229 Main Street, East Hampton, will be open to the public for a special pre-renovation viewing on Saturday, November 28, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Located opposite East Hampton’s Town Pond, the studio is now a National Historic Landmark.

The first artists to build a house with a working studio in the Hamptons in 1884, Thomas Moran and his wife, Mary Nimmo Moran, pioneered local architecture and lifestyle. Before then, artists stayed mostly in boarding houses and worked outdoors or in found spaces.

Thomas Moran painted some of his most important works during the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the Moran House Studio.

Since acquiring title to the property from East Hampton’s Guild Hall in October 2008, the Thomas Moran Trust has completed emergency repairs and long-term stabilization measures to protect the site from further deterioration and possible collapse. Restoration plans are currently underway for the entire site. Saturday is a chance for the community to see the studio portion of the house prior to any renovation work.
