Sophie Mary Buttonow Of Southampton Dies February 12

Sophie Mary Buttonow of Southampton died February 12, 2018, at the Kanas Center for Hospice Care on Quiogue. She was 99.

Born Sophie Mary Gates on October 26, 1918, in Wading River, she was one of eight children. She married Chester J. Buttonow Sr. in 1936 and they settled in Southampton.

Mrs. Buttonow was devoted to her family and friends. She loved gardening, which was one of her many talents, and feeding the birds. She was a faithful member of Our Lady of Poland Church and frequently volunteered at Our Lady of the Hamptons School.

She was predeceased by her husband, Chester; her son, Chester Jr.; and a granddaughter, Christine. She is survived by a son, James Buttonow of Florida; and two daughters, Suzanne Reynolds of Massachusetts and Maryanne Tenreiro of Southampton; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the O’Connell-Rothwell Funeral Home in Southampton. A funeral Mass took place at Our Lady of Poland Church in Southampton, followed by burial at Calverton National Cemetery.
