George Brumsey, affectionately known as “Hawk,” died on January 16, 2018, in Southampton. He was 79.
Born on September 23, 1938, in Currituck, North Carolina, to Janie Brumsey and the late George Brumsey Sr., Mr. Brumsey graduated in 1956 from Currituck Union School, where he excelled in basketball.
On July 27, 1957, he married Marjorie Anne Bright, and soon after the couple relocated to Southampton where they spent 60 years together in the community.
Mr. Brumsey became a member of the Community Baptist Church, serving many years as an usher. As a young man, he was known to be an exceptional bowler, a car enthusiast and race car driver—he loved his blue 1969 Chevy Chevelle. Survivors said he loved preparing Sunday dinners for his family, especially collard greens and ham; he loved landscaping and gardening; and most importantly, he was a family man. He also enjoyed taking his children on family vacations to North Carolina where they stayed between Currituck, and Moyock for one month each summer. He also provided each of his children the opportunity to go to college. He was employed at a Southampton lumber company and Hamptons Tennis Company until retirement.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Brumsey is survived by his mother, Janie Brumsey of Southampton; two daughters, Daphne Brumsey of Southampton and Ronnette Brumsey of Georgia; three sons, Curtis Brumsey (Yvette) of Saint Missouri; Rodney Brumsey of Southampton and Ronnie Brumsey (Demetrice) of Shirley; and 11 grandchildren, Algina Brumsey of Kentucky; Dorthea Brumsey of Tennessee, Deshawn Brumsey of Bridgehampton, Darron Brumsey of Pennsylvania, Shanena Brumsey of Riverhead, Travaun Brumsey of Riverhead, Ronnie Brumsey Jr. of Mastic Beach, Tylia Brumsey of Mastic Beach, Marcus Brumsey of Mastic Beach, Myia DeCosta of Georgia and Dontae Brumsey of Riverhead; five great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his father, George Brumsey Sr.; and two sons, George Brumsey III and Billy Brumsey.
A funeral was held on January 19 at the Community Baptist Church in Southampton, followed by interment at Southampton Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
