George Brumsey, affectionately known as “Hawk,” died on January 16, 2018, in Southampton. He was 79.

Born on September 23, 1938, in Currituck, North Carolina, to Janie Brumsey and the late George Brumsey Sr., Mr. Brumsey graduated in 1956 from Currituck Union School, where he excelled in basketball.

On July 27, 1957, he married Marjorie Anne Bright, and soon after the couple relocated to Southampton where they spent 60 years together in the community.

Mr. Brumsey became a member of the Community Baptist Church, serving many years as an usher. As a young man, he was known to be an exceptional bowler, a car enthusiast and race car driver—he loved his blue 1969 Chevy Chevelle. Survivors said he loved preparing Sunday dinners for his family, especially collard greens and ham; he loved landscaping and gardening; and most importantly, he was a family man. He also enjoyed taking his children on family vacations to North Carolina where they stayed between Currituck, and Moyock for one month each summer. He also provided each of his children the opportunity to go to college. He was employed at a Southampton lumber company and Hamptons Tennis Company until retirement.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Brumsey is survived by his mother, Janie Brumsey of Southampton; two daughters, Daphne Brumsey of Southampton and Ronnette Brumsey of Georgia; three sons, Curtis Brumsey (Yvette) of Saint Missouri; Rodney Brumsey of Southampton and Ronnie Brumsey (Demetrice) of Shirley; and 11 grandchildren, Algina Brumsey of Kentucky; Dorthea Brumsey of Tennessee, Deshawn Brumsey of Bridgehampton, Darron Brumsey of Pennsylvania, Shanena Brumsey of Riverhead, Travaun Brumsey of Riverhead, Ronnie Brumsey Jr. of Mastic Beach, Tylia Brumsey of Mastic Beach, Marcus Brumsey of Mastic Beach, Myia DeCosta of Georgia and Dontae Brumsey of Riverhead; five great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his father, George Brumsey Sr.; and two sons, George Brumsey III and Billy Brumsey.

A funeral was held on January 19 at the Community Baptist Church in Southampton, followed by interment at Southampton Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.

The Bus Test

Social media was abuzz last week with a report: An unmarked bus was dropping off adult men in the parking lot of the Macy’s shopping plaza in Hampton Bays. Speculation was rampant, and it largely followed a national narrative about an “invasion” of immigrants ending up in American communities. In fact, there’s little information on what the bus (or buses — there likely were others) was doing. It might have been seasonal workers arriving for the season, but it could have been something innocuous, like a private bus trip returning home. Terrible Optics

Westhampton Beach Village officials and Police Chief Steven McManus need a lesson in optics. The revelation last week that a body camera video recorded during the investigation of an off-duty Village Police officer who rolled his truck during a single-car accident in November 2021 was not released to the public for close to a year, despite numerous requests from The Press that went unanswered for seven months, sends the wrong signal about the village’s commitment to keeping the public informed. It was only after a request from an attorney on behalf of The Press that a copy of the video ... by Editorial Board

A Costly Hire

Permitting public employees to collect a six-figure pension while simultaneously collecting a six-figure salary is one of the reasons why New York is such a high-tax state. Though the Village of Southampton took it a step further: It wasn’t enough for the new village administrator to receive a $165,000 salary on top of a $120,000 New York Police Department pension — the Village Board just gave Administrator Anthony Carter a $50,000 pay bump, retroactive to when he started in November, in lieu of receiving village health insurance and other benefits. State Sets Aside Funding for Affordable Housing at College Campus

The State Legislature on April 22 approved Governor Kathy Hochul’s request for $600 million in funding for several affordable housing programs, including one that would permit the construction of such units on the Stony Brook Southampton campus. But the celebration has to be put on hold for now, according to Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr., because a related bill that would authorize the actual expenditure of the allocated funds has yet to pass. Thiele said he was optimistic that authorization bill could be passed before the end of the session on June 6. “The legislature had a lot of questions,” ... by Stephen J. Kotz
