Janice Ione Marshall Of The Shinnecock Indian Reservation Dies December 25

Janice Ione Marshall of the Shinnecock Indian Reservation died on December 25, 2017, at Southampton Hospital. She was 77.

Born on July 16, 1940, in Southampton, she was one of five children born to Sewell and Mary C. Somers Smith, both of whom predeceased her. She graduated from Southampton High School in 1958 as valedictorian. She was very active in the Shinnecock Presbyterian Church, serving many years as an elder, youth counselor and Sunday School teacher.

She married her sweetheart, Albert Marshall Sr., in 1959, and they had three children: Catherine Nadine Johnson, Lynne Patricia Marshall and Albert Marshall Jr.

Survivors said she loved children, which was evident even in her choice of employment. At Southampton Public Schools she started as an aide to “Chip,” whom she loved dearly, and she was quickly promoted to secretary to the principal. Her warm presence permeated the office through several changes in principal. She retired in 1996 and embarked on her second most cherished adventure, caring for her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She looked forward to each new day of spending time with them, survivors said, no matter what the adventure entailed.

Ms. Marshall was predeceased by two brothers, Earl David Smith and Norman Franklin Smith; and godson, Lorillard Garret Smith Jr.; brothers-in-law, Lorillard Smith, Arthur Thomas, Thomas Williams, James Davis, Jake Kellis; and sisters-in-law, Barbara Kitt and Natalie Smith.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Albert Marshall Sr.; two daughters, Catherine Nadine Johnson, Lynne Patricia Marshall; and a son, Albert Marshall Jr.; two sisters, Yvonne Elaine Thomas and Gloria Lucille Smith; her grandchildren, Joseph Johnson IV, Nicole Brittany Johnson, Cameron Nova Marshall, Gabriel Marshall, Nyree Lynette Marshall, Nova Addison Marshall and Zion Kendall Marshall; and great grandchildren, William Isaiah Bess III, Duane Jason Bess and Jayceon Tre Johnson. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Beatrice Williams, Corrinne Kellis, Elizabeth Davis; and a brother-in-law, James Kitt; and her godson, Terrell “Terry” Terry.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. A funeral service took place on December 30 at the First Presbyterian Church in Southampton, followed by burial at Shinnecock Cemetery.
