Rosamond Mary Moore Carew, known to family and friends as “Mema,” died at home on September 18, 2017, surrounded by her family. She was 106.

Mrs. Carew was born in Kings County, Brooklyn. After high school, she attended Scutter School of Business in Manhattan, where she met the man who would become her husband, James F. Carew, an attorney in Manhattan. They raised their family in Rockville Centre and after retirement they settled in East Quogue. Mr. Carew died in 1981 and she remained in East Quogue for the next 25 years, staying active in many community organizations. She was a member of the Church of St. Rosalie, local senior citizens organizations and volunteered at Southampton Hospital for more than 18 years.

In 2005 she sold her home and moved to Water Mill to be closer to her family and moved again in 2011 to live with her granddaughter and great-grandchildren. One of the more recent celebrations for her long and happy life was on her 106 birthday, the Ides of March, when she was guest of honor at the bicentennial tribute and annual meeting of the Irish American Society of New York at the New York Yacht Club. She was greeted by Jerry Adams, president of Sinn Fein of Ireland, Mick Mulvaney, the White House budget director and serenaded by General Martin Dempsey, and many other well-known Irish Americans, all wishing her a happy birthday.

She is survived by her children, Peter Carew of Sag Harbor, Rosamond Weir and husband Don of Southampton and Florida, Kathleen McLachlen and husband James of Southampton, and James Carew and wife Nevine of Idaho; seven grandchildren, Collette, Caroline and Donald Weir, Jennifer and James McLauchlen, Nicole and Christopher Carew; and four great-grandchildren, Hayden and Bradley Weir, and Lachlan and Ava Rosamond McLauchlen-Deane.

A private funeral Mass and burial will be held at St. Charles Church.

Two Flee After Hampton Bays Crash, Evade Police Search

Two occupants of a car that fled from police then crashed into another vehicle near Slo Jack’s in Hampton Bays evaded an extensive police search and are still at large. Southampton Town Police say that one of their officers had witnessed a 2022 Honda Accord traveling at a high rate of speed in Hampton Bays on Friday afternoon and attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver refused to pull over and sped up. For safety reasons, the officer broke off his pursuit, as is standard police practice in instances where no immediate threat to the public is suspected. ... 3 May 2024 by Staff Writer

The Bus Test

Social media was abuzz last week with a report: An unmarked bus was dropping off adult men in the parking lot of the Macy’s shopping plaza in Hampton Bays. Speculation was rampant, and it largely followed a national narrative about an “invasion” of immigrants ending up in American communities. In fact, there’s little information on what the bus (or buses — there likely were others) was doing. It might have been seasonal workers arriving for the season, but it could have been something innocuous, like a private bus trip returning home. Police were called, but as one town official pointed ... 1 May 2024 by Editorial Board

Terrible Optics

Westhampton Beach Village officials and Police Chief Steven McManus need a lesson in optics. The revelation last week that a body camera video recorded during the investigation of an off-duty Village Police officer who rolled his truck during a single-car accident in November 2021 was not released to the public for close to a year, despite numerous requests from The Press that went unanswered for seven months, sends the wrong signal about the village’s commitment to keeping the public informed. It was only after a request from an attorney on behalf of The Press that a copy of the video ... by Editorial Board

A Costly Hire

Permitting public employees to collect a six-figure pension while simultaneously collecting a six-figure salary is one of the reasons why New York is such a high-tax state. Though the Village of Southampton took it a step further: It wasn’t enough for the new village administrator to receive a $165,000 salary on top of a $120,000 New York Police Department pension — the Village Board just gave Administrator Anthony Carter a $50,000 pay bump, retroactive to when he started in November, in lieu of receiving village health insurance and other benefits.
