Otto Gmuender of Indianapolis, formerly of Sag Harbor, died on August 31, 2017, at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis. He was 87.
Mr. Gmuender was born May 27, 1930, in Bad Wurzach, Germany, to the late Jakob and Anna (Petretti) Gmuender. On November 13, 1954, he married Elizabeth M. Bernhardt. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, serving in the American occupational forces in Germany from 1954 until 1956.
Mr. Gmuender and his wife owned and operated Otto’s Nord See Delikatessen in Southampton for 28 years. After retiring, they enjoyed spending time together in Florida.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Gmuender was predeceased by his brother, Erik Gmuender; his sister, Elsa Gaile; and a granddaughter, Rosa. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth M. Gmuender; five daughters, Elizabeth “Lisa” Ellen Verone and husband John of Illinois, Doris Ann Jones and husband Steven of Southampton, Carol A. Summey and husband Gary of Indianapolis, Jean Marie Panchame and husband Gus of New Jersey, and Hedy Marie Micallef and husband Keith of Sag Harbor; 10 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Gus, Rachel, Nick, Joanna, Alec, Erika, Gary II, Max, and Caroline; and five great-grandchildren, Eden, Emmett, Oliver, Ellen, and Theo.
A memorial service and Mass was held on September 2 at Our Lady of the Greenwood Catholic Church in Greenwood, Indiana. Burial will be at St. Andrew’s Cemetery in Sag Harbor.
