Gerald “Jerry” Kemp, who had headed the Southampton Village Building Department, died on July 17 in Tarpon Springs, Florida. He was 85.
Mr. Kemp’s architectural career included design, drafting and construction supervision for both residential and commercial buildings. He had also been a code enforcement officer and building inspector for the Village of Southampton. He retired and later moved to Florida where he became a licensed U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Marine officer and boat captain.
He was born in the Bronx to Commander Herbert F. Kemp, USNR, and Margaret McIntyre Kemp. He served in the U.S. Navy as a naval quartermaster, with responsibility for navigation of the ship carrier including use of navigational instruments, utilization of operational techniques and the updates and maintenance of nautical charts.
He was a member of the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Florida.
He is survived by his wife, Maria; three children from his previous marriage, Linda, Susan and Kerry; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton on Thursday, July 28, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral and burial services will be held at Calverton National Cemetery on Friday, July 29, at 1 p.m.
