Robert Hoover Whitmore Dies September 17

author on Oct 6, 2015

Robert Hoover Whitmore of Manhattan, a summer and weekend resident of Southampton for almost 45 years, died in his sleep at his Southampton residence on September 17, after a lengthy illness. He was 77 and the cause of death was heart failure.

Mr. Whitmore, known as “Bob,” was born in Hinton, West Virginia, to Frances Hoover and Robert M. Whitmore on July 8, 1938, and was raised in Lynchburg, Virginia. A graduate of Lynchburg College with letters in swimming and soccer, class of 1959, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1959 to 1961, he held a master’s degree from the University of Virginia and a doctorate from Columbia (1978).

He was a college teacher at Queens College, Stony Brook University, and Montclair State, and an accomplished athlete and mentor. One of his many achievements was as a founder and longtime leader of the New York Ramblers Soccer Club, the first gay-oriented soccer team in the country, which now boasts more than 150 members. The team nurtured similar teams in most other large U.S. cities and was instrumental in forming the international Federation of Gay/Lesbian Football Association, which has thousands of participants worldwide with teams on all continents.

On February 19, 2011, Mr. Whitmore and his partner of 38 years, Alan Koral, were married in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Stamford, Connecticut. Besides his husband, he is survived by a sister, Sherry Whitmore of Florida; nephews, Steven Johnson and his sons, Tyler and Brandon, and Robert Brooks and wife Annette of Virginia; and his in-laws, Marianne and Robert B. Smythe of Maryland and their daughters Katherine Newman and husband Robert and Sarah Lane and husband Mark and their respective children; and a host of friends.

A memorial service will be held at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton on Saturday, October 31, at 3:30 p.m., to be followed by a Halloween party at his home. Costumes are encouraged at both events. Guest are asked to confirm their attendance to Alan Koral at amkoral@aol.com. A memorial will also be held in Manhattan on November 9.

Memorial donations may be made to the New York Ramblers, www.newyorkramblers.org, or by check to Ramblers Soccer New York, via mail to P.O. Box 230330, New York, NY 10023.

The Bus Test

Social media was abuzz last week with a report: An unmarked bus was dropping off adult men in the parking lot of the Macy’s shopping plaza in Hampton Bays. Speculation was rampant, and it largely followed a national narrative about an “invasion” of immigrants ending up in American communities. In fact, there’s little information on what the bus (or buses — there likely were others) was doing. It might have been seasonal workers arriving for the season, but it could have been something innocuous, like a private bus trip returning home. Terrible Optics

Westhampton Beach Village officials and Police Chief Steven McManus need a lesson in optics. The revelation last week that a body camera video recorded during the investigation of an off-duty Village Police officer who rolled his truck during a single-car accident in November 2021 was not released to the public for close to a year, despite numerous requests from The Press that went unanswered for seven months, sends the wrong signal about the village’s commitment to keeping the public informed. It was only after a request from an attorney on behalf of The Press that a copy of the video ... by Editorial Board

A Costly Hire

Permitting public employees to collect a six-figure pension while simultaneously collecting a six-figure salary is one of the reasons why New York is such a high-tax state. Though the Village of Southampton took it a step further: It wasn’t enough for the new village administrator to receive a $165,000 salary on top of a $120,000 New York Police Department pension — the Village Board just gave Administrator Anthony Carter a $50,000 pay bump, retroactive to when he started in November, in lieu of receiving village health insurance and other benefits. State Sets Aside Funding for Affordable Housing at College Campus

The State Legislature on April 22 approved Governor Kathy Hochul’s request for $600 million in funding for several affordable housing programs, including one that would permit the construction of such units on the Stony Brook Southampton campus. But the celebration has to be put on hold for now, according to Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr., because a related bill that would authorize the actual expenditure of the allocated funds has yet to pass. Thiele said he was optimistic that authorization bill could be passed before the end of the session on June 6. “The legislature had a lot of questions,” ... by Stephen J. Kotz
