Harry F. LaMonda Of East Hampton Dies September 10

author on Sep 15, 2015

Harry F. LaMonda of East Hampton died on September 10 at the Riverhead Care Center. He was 89.

Born in Sheldon, Vermont, on June 20, 1926, he was the son of Wesley and Lois Dewing LaMonda. A veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a farmer in Vermont and continued farming at Dune Alpin Farm in East Hampton until it was sold. For a few years he didn’t work, but idleness didn’t suit him and, on a whim, he stopped at McDonald’s in Southampton and applied for a job as a maintenance worker. He got the job—getting up every day at 3 a.m. to drive there and start the coffee—at the age of 70 and continued until he retired at the age of 80.

Mr. LaMonda was predeceased by his wife, Greta; siblings, Roy LaMonda, Wayne LaMonda, Merton LaMonda and Blanche Stone; a daughter, Leslie LaMonda; and Lowella, who died as an infant. He is survived by five children, MaryLou Zuchelli of North Massapequa, Pamela LaMonda Jaffe of Hicksville, Sherill Naster of North Carolina, Harry LaMonda of Shirley and Diana Darrell of East Hampton; and a brother, Leonard LaMonda of Vermont; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton. Interment was at the Brawington Center in Vermont.

Memorial donations may be made to the Everett Albert Herter VFW Post #500, Box 5033, East Hampton, NY 11935 or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014.

Talk Is Cheap

Last week was the final Express Sessions event of the season; a dozen live events brought together panelists and community members to discuss a variety of topics of importance to the community. As the break for a busy summer arrives, the question arises: Does it make a difference? The topic for the event last week in Sag Harbor focused on that village’s readiness for climate change and the perils it will bring — but, like other topics from throughout the fall, winter and spring, it was relevant for other villages and hamlets on the South Fork. Sean Hattrick Runs Unopposed in Tuckahoe

In the Tuckahoe Common School District, voters will be asked to approve a proposed $25,048,825 budget, which seeks to grow the tax levy by 4.41 percent, or $852,919, to $20,188,405. For a home assessed at $1 million, this will mean a $200 increase to the tax bill. Residents will also be asked to consider three propositions — one that levies $65,000 for the district’s participation in the Southampton Youth Association, and another that levies $10,500 for participation in the Parrish Art Museum.
