Louise J. McGuinn Of Southampton Dies December 17

author on Dec 22, 2014

Louise J. McGuinn died on December 17 at Southampton Hospital after a short illness. She was 71.

She was married to a local dentist, Dr. Peter McGuinn, who predeceased her.

Ms. McGuinn moved to Southampton in 1970 and was an active member in the community for more than 40 years. She served on the Board of Historic Preservation and Architectural Review from 1992 to 2002, and on the Village Beautification Committee from 2005 until her death.

Nancy McGann, a friend and member of the Southampton Village Board, said of Ms. McGuinn, “Louise devoted a great deal of time doing good things for the community she loved and believed in—the Village of Southampton. She will be missed by everyone.”

In recent years she was closely involved with Human Resources of the Hamptons. Survivors said she gave a tremendous amount of time to the town and village, and cared deeply for those living here. She had also chaired the Parrish Art Museum’s Spring Fling fundraiser.

Her children lived around the world, and she spent much time traveling overseas to Europe and Australia.

More recently, she split her time between Southampton and New York City. A lover of cultural events, Ms. McGuinn enjoyed taking advantage of the many museums, lectures and events New York offered.

She is survived by three children, Jennifer, Peter and Mary; and two grandchildren, Patrick and Stella, to whom she was known as “Mamere.”

Services were private; funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.

Memorial donations may be made out to Human Resources of the Hamptons, 168 Hill Street, Southampton, NY 11968.

The Bus Test

Social media was abuzz last week with a report: An unmarked bus was dropping off adult men in the parking lot of the Macy’s shopping plaza in Hampton Bays. Speculation was rampant, and it largely followed a national narrative about an “invasion” of immigrants ending up in American communities. In fact, there’s little information on what the bus (or buses — there likely were others) was doing. It might have been seasonal workers arriving for the season, but it could have been something innocuous, like a private bus trip returning home. Police were called, but as one town official pointed ... 1 May 2024 by Editorial Board

Terrible Optics

Westhampton Beach Village officials and Police Chief Steven McManus need a lesson in optics. The revelation last week that a body camera video recorded during the investigation of an off-duty Village Police officer who rolled his truck during a single-car accident in November 2021 was not released to the public for close to a year, despite numerous requests from The Press that went unanswered for seven months, sends the wrong signal about the village’s commitment to keeping the public informed. It was only after a request from an attorney on behalf of The Press that a copy of the video ... by Editorial Board

A Costly Hire

Permitting public employees to collect a six-figure pension while simultaneously collecting a six-figure salary is one of the reasons why New York is such a high-tax state. Though the Village of Southampton took it a step further: It wasn’t enough for the new village administrator to receive a $165,000 salary on top of a $120,000 New York Police Department pension — the Village Board just gave Administrator Anthony Carter a $50,000 pay bump, retroactive to when he started in November, in lieu of receiving village health insurance and other benefits.
