Mr. Newman was born in Orange, New Jersey, on September 24, 1926, the son of the late John E. and Mary Ingersoll Newman. He graduated from Newark Academy and then from Princeton University in 1950. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and again during the Korean War. He spent many years on Wall Street and lived in New York City before moving to New Canaan. For nearly 50 years, he spent summers in Quogue, where he was a fixture on the tennis court and golf course.
Mr. Newman’s family said he spent the last 10 years of his life happily doting on his two step-grandchildren, Charlotte and Oliver Smith.
Mr. Newman is also survived by a brother, Charles Newman and wife Anglesea of New Jersey; a sister, Eleanor N. Caulkins of Colorado; a stepson, Alexander G. Smith and wife Peggy of New York City and Quogue; and a stepdaughter, Victoria Sartorius of Rye. He was predeceased by a brother, Bruce E. Newman.
Mr. Newman’s ashes will be interred in the Quogue Cemetery at a private ceremony on September 6.
