John H. “Jack” Windels Jr. of Flanders died April 28, surrounded by his family. He was 76.
Mr. Windels was born in Brooklyn and he spent his childhood in Bayport. He married his wife, Annmary Larson, in 1961. He owned Island Tank and Iron Works in Bayport, a structural steel and fabrication shop, which helped build many of the hospitals and schools on Long Island. In 1977 he decided to sell his business and build a 65-foot steel fishing dragger. This project took 18 months, after which he moved his family to East Quogue and fished out of Shinnecock Inlet for the next 30 years.
Mr. Windels is survived by his wife of 52 years, Annmary; three children, John Windels III, Susanne Widels and Robin Windels Ruggiero and husband James; six grandchildren, Kristina, Jake IV, Emily and MaryRose Windels, and James and Bella Ruggerio; and two brothers, Carl and Robert, and their families.
The family received visitors at Follett and Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach on May 2. A funeral Mass took place on May 3 at the Immaculate Conception Church on Quiogue.
