Dale Uhll of Conway, South Carolina, formerly of Amagansett, died October 31. He was 71.
Born September 7, 1942, he was the son of Howard and Marie Uhll of Southampton.
Mr. Uhll’s first love, survivors said, was “wrenching” and racing cars, especially his No. 18 car at the Riverhead Raceway, which earned him the respect of his colleagues. He was also respected in his chosen field as a builder and general contractor. Many of the homes he built were on the East End.
Self-educated, he left school early to support his family, and later would earn a certificate in architectural estimating from Pace University in his quest to further enrich his professional knowledge. He literally built his business, Dale Uhll Inc., and his home in Amagansett from the ground up. Along the way, he volunteered with the Amagansett Fire Department for 15 years.
Survivors said that in his own quiet and unassuming way, he always watched out for his family and neighbors, quietly offering help and advice without any expectation in return. In later years, he and his wife, Dona, moved to South Carolina, where Mr. Uhll continued to help his neighbors and local contractors build, despite being “retired.”
In addition to his wife, Dona, he is survived by his children, Michael Uhll of Ghent, Tommy and wife Alexandra of Maine, and Laura Miller and husband Daniel of Levittown; siblings, Joan Thalacker and husband Stanley of South Dakota, Linda Uhll and husband Peter Rothbart of Ithaca; and grandchildren, Hannah and Jack Uhll and Christopher, Andrew and Lillian Miller.
A memorial service was held at Mr. Uhll’s home in South Carolina on Saturday, November 2, with another to be held in the spring at Barnes Landing.
