Southampton Montessori School "Stepping Stones" students recently welcomed the New Year with big smiles.

Hampton Bays High School seniors Skye McMorris, left, and Gabrielle Caine have been named National Merit Commended Students. In addition to their studies, both students are involved in their school. Gabrielle is a member of the Interact and Rotary Youth Leadership clubs. She also sings, plays the cello and is the founder of the Healthy Harmony Club, a group of student musicians who perform at area nursing homes. She intends to pursue studies in the music industry in college. Skye is a science research student and a member of her school’s Key Club, Interact Club and Science Olympiad team. She also plays volleyball. She plans to study biochemistry in college.

Gaudy October is gone. The November landscape is muted colors, falling leaves and skeletal branches. The month opens with reminders of death. There were strong Democratic victories nationally in last week’s election, led by Mikie Sherrill winning the governorship of New Jersey, and Abigail Spanberger winning the governorship of Virginia, and other Democratic wins seen as involving clear anti-President Donald Trump viewpoints. In Suffolk County, we were in the viewing area in which a torrent of TV commercials were broadcast in the race between Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli, who in most of them stressed his staunch support for Trump. Southampton Town is once again bringing holiday cheer with its annual Letters to Santa program. Children are invited to share their Christmas wishes by sending a letter along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope, including details like their name, wish list, siblings, pets, hobbies and anything special they’d like Santa to know. Letters can be mailed to the Parks and Recreation Office on Newtown Road or the Hampton Bays Community Center on Ponquogue Avenue, or dropped off in person Monday through Friday. Vendors Sought for Riverhead Holiday Fair

Vendors are being sought for the Wooden Wonderland: Holiday Artisanal Gift Fair to be hosted by the Suffolk County Historical Society Museum on Saturday, December 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. The Southampton Town Kiwanis Club is offering fresh baked apple pies to be picked up in time for Thanksgiving.
