Mario Monaco of Hampton Bays died on August 29. He was 88.

He was born on November 6, 1931 in Agropoli, in the Campania region of Italy. At the age of 16, he emigrated to the United States and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

In 1969, Mr. Monaco opened Mario’s Barbershop on Ponquogue Avenue in Hampton Bays and continued as the shop’s owner and barber until his retirement in 2010.

He was married to Anne Fagan Monaco in 1959 until her death in 1985. His second marriage in 1990 to Jeannette Sander Monaco lasted until her death in 2010.

He is survived by his companion, Charon Roth; his children, Steven Monaco and Elisabeth Monaco Kraft; four grandchildren; his step-children; step-grandchildren; and great-grandchildren he shared with Jeannette.

Visiting will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, September 8 and 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. at R.J. O’Shea Funeral Home, Inc., 94 East Montauk Hwy, Hampton Bays. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Church of St. Rosalie in Hampton Bays on Thursday, September 10, at 10 :30 a.m. Interment at Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary Cemetery in Southampton will follow the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Heart Association would be appreciated by the family.
