Richard Mongiello of Riverhead, formerly of Hampton Bays, died on December 29 as a result of a fall at his condo alone in Florida. He was 80.

Born in the Bronx on August 27, 1940, he was the son of Generoso and Teresina Mongiello. Upon graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Mr. Mongiello was a long-time employee and retiree from Con Edison. He was an avid golfer and a huge sports fan. His favorite teams were the Dallas Cowboys, New York Rangers, and, most of all, his beloved New York Yankees.

In 2013, he moved to Stoneleigh Woods in Riverhead. He was an active member of the communities in which he lived. He was a past commander of the American Legion Post 924 Hampton Bays, an active participant in the honor guard at the American Legion, he carried the American flag for all ceremonies and parades involving the community of Hampton Bays.

He was a dedicated volunteer at his church, Saint Isadore in Riverhead, the Special Olympics in Atlanta, and at the U.S. Open in Shinnecock Hills.

Survivors said he will always be remembered for his care and compassion, which he shared with his family and friends. His tireless dedication to his beloved American Legion Post 924 was overwhelming. He was an inspiration to all that knew him, his family said. He was also known as “ The Monge” and “The Great Kahuna” by his family and friends. As a proud former Marine, his favorite expression was “OORAH” and he would say it with deep pride and appreciation each time.

He was married to Patricia Moravec on February 11, 1961. She died on May 15, 1997. He then married Geraldine O’Shea on November 10, 2002. She died three years ago on February 28, 2018.

Mr. Mongiello is survived by his children, Richard (Donna), Kevin (Cathy), Donnamarie (Paul Humbert) and Tricia (Daniel Romano); and his 18 grandchildren Drew, Brett, Isabella, Daniel, Jenna, Sean, Patrick, Reilly, Meghan, Erin, Kevin, Ryan, Conor, Colby, Kiera, Braeden, Tommy and Maggie.
