From the first day humans stood up straight and walked on Planet Earth, the quest to discover the “Laws of Nature,” science, is and has been one of the major forces moving mankind forward.

In the Western world, Aristotle is credited as being the “Father of Science,” to be followed by numerous great minds, like Galileo, Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Father Georges Lemaitre and Stephen Hawking. All these great scientists have worked on formulating a set of laws to define our universe.

The one law they could not define was: How can one person be in two different places at the same time? This solution was supplied by “The Great Houdini” — but, then again, he was an illusionist and not a scientist.

I am sure at this point everyone must be thinking, what does all this have to do with anything?

On May 6, the front-page story, written by Brendan J. O’Reilly, was about Bridget Fleming announcing her candidacy for Congress [“Bridget Fleming Announces Candidacy For Congress,” 27east.com, May 3]. This was very confusing, as Bridget is on this November’s ballot for reelection to the Suffolk County Legislature — and now she says she will also be running for U.S. Congress, in 2022, at the same time.

In an attempt to explain herself, Bridget said, “This is going to be an expensive race. We need to spend the time raising the millions to beat the others.”

Eureka! Bridget has found a way to be in two places at the same time — the Suffolk County Legislature, representing us, and on the political fundraising circuit, representing herself.

Or is this just an illusion?
